2G Why doesn't my 2g GSX Thermal R&D exhaust sounds like other Thermal exhausts

Own a 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. It is pushing around 350 horsepower. Has a 5252 precision turbo. When I got the car it had a SRS exhaust system that in my opinion didn't sound all that great. Heard in the past and seen videos of DSM's with Thermal R&D Exhaust that sounded great.

So I bought a used Thermal R&D exhaust system and Megan downpipe but after having it installed the noise/sound didn't change much. The Thermal R&D exhaust doesn't have that rumble to it like most other Thermal R&D exhausts. Since putting it on I haven't taken a video of the exhaust note but I will soon. What do I have to do to get the Thermal R&D exhaust to have that rumble like I heard in person or on YouTube videos?

Going to post a video of a Thermal R&D Exhaust that is a good example of what I'm talking about and I'm going to post a video also of the SRS exhaust and SRS downpipe on my GSX to show how it sounded before and how it sounds right now with a little bit of a difference in sound. Don't have a cat on the car and has 272 cams.

The video of the SRS exhaust on the car and to be honest the sound of the exhaust got a little worse it sounded like a vibration noise from inside the car.

Video of Thermal R&D Exhaust on a 2g GST I found online dad does the Exhaust justice. This is how I thought my GSX was going to sound after I installed it on my car. 10 times better than what I have now and a hundred percent sure its a real Thermal R&D Exhaust.

Not sure on the Thermal R&D design, but the more straight through the exhaust the more the turbo and manifold have to do with the sound.

Do you have a restrictor or silence plate in the muffler? The muffler, muffler tip, and resonator are going to affect the sound tone more than anything.

What is the diameter of the downpipe and are you running a high flow cat in the Thermal exhaust? Both make significant differences in sound.

No cat and idk the size of thr downpipe. All i know its a regular dsm megan downpipe

No restricter or silencer

Not sure on the thermal design, but the more straight through the exhaust the more the turbo and manifold have to do with the sound.

I have an Evo 3 exhaust manifold that is portwd and a 5252 precision ball bearing turbo

To seriously answer your question, over time the sound of the mufflers can change from age and wear and tear, carbon build up in the muffler etc. Typically as an exhaust system gets older it gets louder to a certain extent. If you want a deeper tone you should add another resonator

I reckon it might have to do with degreeing your camshafts. Are you running adjustable cam gears or oem fixed?

Beside all the mechanical differences in your car and any other with the same exhaust you have to consider the differences in cameras (microphones actually) and camera / microphone placement in the videos you are using for comparison.

For example, shoot the same video you made again with the same camera but place it about two feet back and two feet to the side, pointed at the exhaust tip and listen back to THAT exhaust sound. You may recognize it as the same sound, but it will be different, and if that was the only sound we had to go by (like from a video) we might get the wrong impression of what your exhaust sounds like.

Now factor in a different recording device on top of that. Most any video examples are going to be kinda useless. This is why I used the same camera and camera angle when I did my before and after exhaust replacement video.

That white gst YouTube is what got me into buying my Thermal R&D I have stock t25 stock downpipe with cat I had a cat delete Ss MR downpipe once and it sounded the same I sold my cat delete toke vids in the vids they sound the same just like that white GST YouTube vid

Without having the same exact exhaust/mani/turbo/cam setup as the car you are trying to sound like it wont happen but you can get close.. Is a muffler included in the exhaust kit? Make sure you dont have any exhaust rattle, that tends to throw the pitch way off.

What is Exhaust rattle?

Exhaust rattle: when the engine shakes (vibrates) the exhaust does too, most of the movment is reduced by flexpipe or a flange designed to do so. But in the case that the exhaust is too close to another portion of the car (typically a heat shield) it makes its own noise so you hear the rattle and the exhaust tone at the same time making the exhaust sound off. Sometimes its an obvious, annoying sound and sometimes its just a slightly different pitch then the exhaust tone itself. Sorry for the long response, im not on here much.

MJCanadas right. There's a ton of variables that can affect the sound. turbine a/r, o2 housing, condition of exhaust (dents). Plus everything sounds different in person then on camera. That 2g's tiny stock t25 turbine housing dumping into a 3inch downpipe will create a rumble like that.

I know this is an old and dead thread, but I just came across it, and the white Wclipse in that youtube video is my old car . It sounded even better and deeper in person.

The biggest reason the exhaust tone sounded the way it did was because of the OEM exhaust manifold. The OEM exhaust manifold has "unequal length" runners, which is what helps creates that low rumble. So if you're not running the OEM manifold and turbo, it won't sound that way.

Also, the downpipe may have played a small part, but really any full 3" downpipe should get that exact same tone (as long as you have the OEM manifold).
