Why did I lose power?

Yep, Ohio
So last summer I raced a friend's STi from 30 and walked him every time. (16g ~ 18lbs, intake, cat-back, AFC, etc...) The car was away for the winter, but when I got it back I installed a FMIC and a d/p knowing the stock dp and stock IC/ Piping were really hurting my performace. Well, I raced my frined's STi again last week (he's got an intake now & BOV, but that's it) and it was a different story. Right off the bat he pulled ~ half car and we were just even until 4th when I caught up and eventually passed him.
I think the car just needs tuned so I'm going to have it dyno tuned in a few weeks. You think this is the main reason my she seems to be struggling for the time being? It seemed to run better before the fmic and dp.

How long have you been driving the car since you got it back? And it doesn't sound like you lost power, it sounds like you both gained power, but he got more of it, or you had a really really crappy launch.

Did you have a hard time getting the turbo to spool?

We were from a roll, so it's pretty much HP vs HP. I drove the car ~ 2-3 weeks before the FMIC and dp install. I would have thought that adding a FM and dp would have helped me more than a simple intake would have helped him.
I have a GTech Pro Comp and before it said I had ~ 221 whp... I did a pull on it afterwards and it says I only gained 5 hp. Sounds about right, doesn't feel any faster to me.
I think I need to get it on the dyno and get the AFC tuned correctly...

no boost leaks right???

well....what really happened was....you got played for a fool the jerk off is probably running a 4" downpipe and a 3.5" exhaust. thoes cars come 300 hp stock running 12.9 with pro drivers. they are SICK! if he doesnt have an exhaust i bet money he has a downpipe! all the STI guys around here are QUICK and are not the cars to be messin with, besides the fact they have 1k worth of guages!

ROFL
Na man, the dude in the STi is like my best friend. Everyhting done to his car I know about it because I help him install them. Definetly does not have an exhaust... any part of one.

You haven't bothered to tune your car (after the FMIC install) at all? With the denser air you're probably lean.

With approx. 221WHP, you're beating a lightly modded STi?

Can this guy not drive for shit?

Hmmm, good idea. I noticed my EGTs climb significantly just driving low-throttle... like 1400+ just crusing @ 3k. I richened up the low-throttle, so maybe I'll try and richen up the high throttle too.
Though, I thought richening the AF would make me lose power...

The STi puts like 15ish more WHP than that but weighs 400 lbs more...

That's some drivetrain loss. I wasn't aware it was that bad... Thanks for the info, though - makes me feel better about being able to kill some soon.

AWD will do that to you. It was an old R&T or something when they did the STi vs MR, they DynoJet'ed the STi at like 238 whp or something like that. And that's DynoJet, which will give you higher numbers than say a Mustang dyno (or G-Tech for that matter), because the DynoJet does not take into consideration weight, C/D, wind resistance, friction, etc...

How do you know you don't have boost leaks? Did you just tighten down all the clamps so you assume you dont have any or did you really pressure test?

I assumed I didn't have any either and I had a shit load of them. Simply tightening down the clamps isn't enough to make it seal. Sometimes you have to shift the clamp around or put hair spray on the silicone.

Exactly my thoughts when when I got to that post. I have yet to see someone perform a leak test after any kind of intake trac work and found no leaks. Also the STIs are not as slow as you put it, especially the part that you pass him at 4th gear. He must not know how to drive. If he can't pull one to two cars on you with AWD, he doesn't know how to launch.

honestly I wouldnt expect to notice any gains just from slapping on a fmic and a downpipe. Now you don't have to worry about heatsoak anymore ( or at least at only 18 psi ) and you can run more boost since the stock intercooler is no longer a restriction, but you still need to raise the boost and tune it to take advantage of the new parts. The downpipe shouldn't make a world of difference either.

i have to disagree here. with his mods, he should definitely notice a difference. maybe not a 30hp gain but it should definitely be noticeable. as far as the downpipe, he's opening up exhaust restrictions so he should feel a gain. hell i felt one when i put on a 2.5" downpipe.
