Why aren't the pistons lining up

winnipeg,
Ok so I'm working on pulling a 6-bolt out of a car from the wrecker. I've already taken the head and I'm taking of the hub nut and the cv spins and the car is in gear. That is not important but as this is happening the pistons go through there strokes 4,3,2 are fine but 1 never hits TDC it's about a 1/4" away. I"m still debating to pull the engine and open it up to see whats the matter and whether its worth buying. Is there anything in particular to look out for?
thanks

The only thing that could probably cause that would be a severely bent rod. If all the pistons flush the deck and number 1 doesn't, I would for sure pull the oil pan and have a look see. Then I would be extremely curious as to what may have caused it.

Good Luck

Thanks ill giver a try. The only thing i could think of is the rod too, but by a quarter of an inch. The car had been running it like this it appers aswell. And one last thing, the piston was so far over to one side against the wall that i could clearly see the rings from above.

Ok so I got it all apart and what do you know, a bent rod...go figure. So the rods a total loss as well as there is damage to the cylinder at the very botton where the bent rod smashed it. Its not a big spot way way way lower then the rings should ever want to go in a running car so thats not an issue. As well the smash zone is smo0th as glass so would you consider the block a loss? or is it worth the 80$.

I' d say, have the block checked for cracks, & if its ok, bore it and you're good. Your machine shop should know if the lower bore is too wrecked to use. You ought to have the crank checked for cracks and straightness too. Whatever bent that rod WTF was probably not too kind to the crank either. 80 beans seems ok, I guess, a 6bolt head is probably worth that alone.

I had a person change their own injectors. They forgot the o-ring and dumped raw fuel into the cylinder. When it started, or tried to start, the engine hydrostatically locked and bent the rod. Like you, it got the lower part of the cylinder and totally ruined a good engine for lack of a 25 cent o-ring. However, it was a GM product, and we don't have that same type of situation.

Anyway, good luck

So I got the engine back to my place. They only charged me 50 dollars(thats canadian) so like 12 cents american so for comic relief here is some pictures.
