Mississauga,
I’m probably going to lose creditability on this one but I don’t have any so I got nothing to lose...

I installed my 16g with supporting mod except for the SAFC, I wanted to start the car before I begin tuning to isolate any potential problems. Also I did not use a gasket between the exhaust mani and the engine because I ordered an evo mani and I did not want to waste my new gasket on my stock mani (I was impatient, i just wanted to start the car so i use my stock mani). Anyways, I started the car and let it run for 2 min tops to see if the car was running and if there were any leaks. I noticed white smoke between the mani and engine and my mani got hot to the touch after 2 min. Then I remembered that I only put 2 litres of oil in the engine WHOOOPS! I’m worried now that i screwed up my car. Is the white smoke normal and should the mani get hot that fast (no heat shield)

A hot manifold is completely normal, especially without the gasket. Within that time I'm not sure there could be a whole lot of damage but you never know. Do things right the first time and you never go wrong. Anyways, check for damage just to be safe. Not sure what the white smoke was, I'm thinking it's because of no gasket combined with oil.

Well to my knowledge your in the safe zone. A engine will usualy run about 15 - 250 miles without oil. I seen someone at work do it before. A woman came in to get an got an oil change. The tech drained the oil changed the filter an forgot to put oil in it, LOL. Latter that day the woman called from the dealership in town. The dealer told her they found no oil in the engine an it locked up. LOL The real bad thing about it was that the car was brand new Jeep Wrangler.... Not even 5000 miles on it.

It shouldnt of hurt the car especially since you were only idleing RIGHT???? I has a fellow DSMer that didnt place the oil filter on right and he started it and after it ran for a minute i looked under the car and all of the oil had poured out :tease:what a mess but hes still driving it no problems.

yup it only idled. I just wanted to see if the car would start and if there was any leaks which there was. my oil feed line was dripping a little Im gonna use teflon on the 90 degree fitting hopefully that will work.
thanks for the replies

When the oil level in a DSM is at a dangerous point, the lifters make a racket like all hell. If you didn't hear that, you're probably all right.
The smoke could have been from dirty fingerprints.

I have an impressive oil leak. I needed to add about 5 quarts to it a few weeks ago, so I must have been down crazy low. I drove it around before I noticed the low oil light coming on and off. Added oil and it's been running fine since. I'd say you're good if you just idled it.

yea the average 4 cyl engine only uses about 4.5 quarts unless there is a diff oil pan or someting like that

yeah it is 4.5 quarts

I just remembered that for a gasket I used some silicone sealant just for a temporary solution maybe that is what is burning off and creating the smoke

I bought the sealant for my oil feed line its not meant for high heat I just used it for a temporary solution. I’m pretty sure that is what was burning because I did apply quite a bit. Anyways, I got my evo manifold Fri I’m going to install it next week as I have exams to study for still.
