Summer 06 The build was a success, I like the car the motor is tired but it is time to move to phase II. Well by now I have the tools, experience, a car, and money so lets go. So I ask myself what are the goals? I prefer street cars so that is the main objective so, no cages, no aluminum seats, has to have interior, no welded diffs, no slicks, has to have a system you get the idea. Power: anywhere from 500-700 should be enough. Handling: must have everything for a good road race car. Looks: The cleanest 1g ever built. So it looks like this thing is going under the knife for a long time if I want all of those things. I am not rich so money is there but only comes in incrementally. So the first thing is the body, I want my Laser damnit and if I couldn't find one I was going to make one. So I acquired the rear end of a 92-94 Laser which is my favorite. The project was easy, and only took like 1 ½ hours. All I had to do was drop the bumper support tack welded bracket down an inch or so and that was it, of course I had to do some rewiring for the tail lights to get them to work like actual laser lights but that wasn't hard.

looks good clean 1g's for sure!

Weight is a big issue in racing so some had to be shed, also the front end of flip ups is growing old on me. I rarely run them up because they are parachutes when racing at night, they weigh a lot and I wasn't the fondest of that style of front end so it was time for them to go. I was going to a 92-94 talon front end. It is not really that difficult just very time consuming unlike the rear. If you want it to be right, straight, and have it look like it came from the factory that way, it takes time. First was acquiring the parts, old Fast Eddy here in town, you know him at the SO as the guy who would bring a huge U-Hual full of parts up hooked me up. We had been swapping parts for ever so I called in a few favors. I picked up two mint fenders, and he had a parts car for me to rape the head light and fender brackets on the core support that differ from a 1gA to 1gB. Another friend gave me a mint front bumper that was taking up valuable space in his mothers attic. Lastly I sold my flip up carbon fiber hood to a good friend, and used that money to purchase a new VIS hood from a kat in Cbus, OH. What good conversion would not be complete with out those perfectly clear head lights off of EBAY, say good bye 1987 hello 2006. Installing the brackets required drilling out the old spot welds and removing them, after that I just drilled the holes all to the same diameter and used 6mm bolts to hold everything. Yes you could reweld the new ones in, however my method give you adjustment for fine tuning of the bumper, headlights, and fender, and besides my bolts probably aren't going to fall off.

Looks good can't wait to see how that conversion came out.

Now I was sold on the Eclipse 1gA spoiler, that wrap around thing is :barf: and the side skirts of a Talon was a bit much for me, too aggressive, so I stepped down to the 1gA eclipse side skirts, with the laser middle trim, ahh my master piece was finished. So what color am I going to paint this thing I asked myself, well I had owned about every color their was in a 1g except one. I had always liked it but they were so rare, I mean come on there are 1000s of white DSMs, so I wanted something stock, I wanted something, rare, and lastly something I really liked so I went with the factory teal: paint code T-13. Now since I am doing a full restoration here the body work and paint are going to be last, the correct way to restore a car is to build it once the way you want everything, and then take it all back apart and clean, paint, polish, etc, and then reassemble.

WARNING: Electrical stuff is for the very experienced mechanic, I do not recommend anybody attempt this unless you are an electrical expert, if you do try and don't know what you are doing your car may never run again, I certainly had a few kinks but was able to figure them out because of my electrical skills. If we are going for clean a wire tuck is a no brainer for under the hood and for simplicity I was going to make my own ECU harness, first thing was to take apart the harness and label each wire since the ecu shares some of the same colors not too mention Ts and other things. I then used two GM radio harness that have about 20 pins each to allow my engine harness to be disconnected right at the head so the harness itself does not need to be pulled when doing a head swap. I just bought two head unit connector kits to match the ones I got in the junk yard, it is hard to find 20 pin connectors that have two sides.

Good write up highboost. Do you have your phd in boost. If your Dr. Turbo my brother is Dr. Non-Turbo he's had similiar experiences with the n/t's. Nice titches btw.

Weight reduction: this a street car so I couldn't just grab my harnesses and throw them away, so I literally had to go through each one and carefully discard with a schematic in hands each wire that didn't do something to make the car operational. People, this is what dreams are made of. I'm not going to discuss each part of the wiring process but it took about 1 ½ years to get it situated the way I wanted it, and for the record I never blew ONE fuse the entire time.

WOW is all i can say you are a shining example of prowess and dedication to the dsm community your story touched me and i am sure it will touch others. I have had eight dsm's myself. That was a great story and you have rightfully earned your PH.D in my eyes. Keep up the amazing work and keep yourself safe my friend. We cant loose a good one like you. Your dedication is a cut above and your undying desire is inspiration to the up and coming hobbyist. I can empathize with your desire for perfection and with an exponential amount of hard work blood, sweat and tears we can all attain what you I and the rest of us seek. You are a cut above the rest man honestly your story was great a real inspiration. Fing awesome I almost  when i got to your accident it brought back some memories. I am glad you wanted to share your experience with the cars you love with us. :thumb::thumb: :applause: :applause:. I have read this post about seven times and I am still not tired of it wow wow and WOW

Respect given when respect is deserved.
Holy hell, you deserve it.

Very nice thread. It's like looking into the past.

Thanks for the good read Dr. Turbo.

This is hilarious. You went to community college just to learn about your DSM? You're not a doctor. A doctor is someone like the guy who sewed your head together. Too bad.

So wait, you nearly killed yourself and 3 others yet still defend street racing? Get the #### out of here you ####ing tool. You honestly haven't learned your lesson. This thread is an attention whore thread. Piece of shit.

easy killer he never said he was racing if i recall he was drifting, which im sure EVERYONE on here has drifted before and he also said he learned his lesson. your post was in no way helpful to anyone. if you have nothing to add to a thread dont post.

if he supports street racing thats his choice go cry me a river

At this point I'm at the most critical point in the build. It is imperative that I carefully choose the next part wisely. The most important part under the hood is the intake manifold, everything stems from that. It dictates RPM band you are going to use, turbo, IC piping, PT mounting, coil set up, t-body, wiring, etc. Now this car is for road racing so peak power is a no no, so no 280 cams, no gt 40/42s, I am looking for a car that make great power between 4-8500. Well lets just say I spent my fair share of time evaluating the perfect intake manifold. The manifold comes down to this, runner length and plenum volume, oh I know there is more such as velocity stack etc, but for the most part that is the basics. Short runners are great for really high revving motors, long runners are great for torque.

So what was the best manifold for me. As I researched intake manifolds in general and not just DSMs the perfect intake is a dual runner one. Well hallelujah Mitsubishi is about 1 of 5 companies to ever have made them stock on a car. The 91 ZR-1s did, so did the Yamaha Taurus SHO, etc. I mean it makes perfect since, the theory is the same as VVT, or a compound turbo setup. Well after researching Cyclones it was made a point by all who had with a large turbo that the spool up was increased several hundred RPM. Money! I have my manifold. The problem is the stock manifold is that they run out of steam after 7000 rpm. The reason for this I believe, (I don't have number to prove it) but the plenum is just too small so the ideal manifold for me would be a stock one with a larger plenum.

Now Dave Buschur years after I had thought of this actually did the testing and cut the plenum off of an EVO and welded on a bigger one. The gains were minimal and he said it wasn't worth it and I'll take Dave's word for it. I sent him an email and said Dave yours and I theory I believe is good but you went about it the wrong way. I said when you cut the stock plenum off it messed with the flow characteristics of how it was designed, and then I let him in on what I was going to do. I left the stock plenum alone but just added more to it. Rule of thumb CC's of motor should = plenum CC's. So what I did was add another half of a stock plenum before where the original t-body sits not to mess with the design of the plenum. So I acquired two cyclones, each from two different friends locally for very cheap $35/$25. I measured the perfect point to weld and then had it professionally cut at the Community College for an exact cut on both pieces. I then familiarized my self with a new person in my life... my welder.

Welding is an art it takes years to master, $ 1000s in equipment, and the welds always look better from a pro than a DIYer. This car has to look good so pro welding is the only answer. Jim and I become friends quickly, I give him the mani, and he sews it right up to perfection. Ahh yes, the next question? How am I going to actuate it, easy I'll let boost do it, I figure by the time boost hits that will be the perfect time for that thing to open anyhow. Any twin runner intake should be opening between 4100 and 4600. So if I used a stock wastegate that should be a perfect rpm to easily achieve those 7 psi it needs to get that wastegate actuating. Getting the wastegate to line took some work but was doable. Now we are cooking with Wesson... enjoy.

did i quote you? NO haha so who gives a rats ass about what he does in his free time i saw a video on this forum about an hour ago of a new built car oh god "street racing" 2 evo's and all he got was complements, this thread is to document his build not waste time on you HATERS:nono:

nice car:thumb: pay these fools no attention

I make my next contact. Joe at SBR is going to become a friend of mine as I am going to start ordering parts from him. He remembers me from the SO, and was like: “ yea you have the cleanest DSM I have ever seen” I said just wait, oh and send me the race FMIC. Check out my new grille OCHO CINCO.

Look past the shiny pictures. This thread is nothing but him telling the world how awesome he is.

Good Lord, you're an even bigger dick than I thought. The good 'Dr.' seems to have a need for an ego stroking. You're as bad as that tool telling everyone how 'high' his IQ was a few days ago. I swear, I've never, ever met an asshole that glorifies street racing as much as you do. It makes me absolutely sick.
