Alright guys, well I just finished my 14B install in my 95 GSX. All is well besides some minor oil leaks on the return line and the SS feed line at the filter housing. There was also a VERY minor coolant leak from the front banjo bolt on the turbo. I tightened it a tad and I think i went away. Now the turbo is spooling really late because I think there may be a leak before the turbo.
Now on to the problems.

1. The turbo does not smoke at all besides at WOT sometimes it blows out whiteish grey smoke. I'm trying to think of where it could be burning coolant. It never did this before the turbo install.

2. There was some white smoke the past 2 days at the manifold. I'm thinking its the shitload of PB Blaster that I sprayed all over the car but I'm not sure.

3. There's a smell coming from my engine that I can smell if I pop my hood and it becomes more noticeable when I'm driving and really get on it. It smells like burning plastic sort of, with a mix of burning rubber. The lower heat shield is not on the car because it's a pain to get on and I haven't put it back on because I haven't had time. Nothing is touching anything hot so I 'm confused...The only possible thing is maybe I pout on a new 4 ply exhaust mani. gasket as well as antiseize on most of the bolts and the turbo-mani. bolts.

Any help? Thanks.

Oil in the runners is usually valve stem seals. White smoke is either coolant burning or its runnin lean. Could be that you leaking some coolant in to the ehxaust when the turbo spools up.

How often do you have to add oil?

Just did an oil change 2 days ago. an I made sure that all coolant lines are properly torqued. I am not losing any coolant. Could the turbo cause a blueish white smoke when you goose the throttle. And how would you know you are running lean. I checked the plugs and they are carbon fouled which is weird cause a engine that burns oil would have a oily residue on them. I am completely stumped again......:cry:

+1

If your valve stems are leaking and at a good rate oil will more than likely be burning in the manifold or turbo. Guides on the intake side will carbon up your spark plugs though. Especially if your car run's fine.... Bluish gray smoke

Coolant and lean conditions give off white smoke....

the exhaust is black for a second while i shift the plugs have black like powder and white tips so im going ot get the next stage cooler...

haha and yeahh the wastegate was unplugged actually howd you know?! is that common

will this definetly bring my boost down? or do i need a boost controller to turn it back down

is that not good? what do you mean?

Stock injector Don't Really provide enough Fuel for 22 psi, so there really is not a way to run to rich at that boost level with stock injectors...You have a Logger? What are your IDC's?

Edit: Wait...
Or did you mean about what I said...?

well it was running 22psi boost i know? i obviously dont kno too much about cars! and i dont know what size the injectors are i can check tomorrow

would running rich cause my car to smoke?

Is your car stock? What mods do you have? A lot of times you will usually have an overheating issue.. Sometimes not depending on your driving habits. Do a boost leak test just to be safe... And change fuel filter. The easiest way to check for lean conditions is with a data logger...

i let some kid that im comfortable with drive the car, he knows a lot about cars and he said it was running rich, and when he was driving it and shifter, it was black smoke... but at idle its white?!

idk what to do? buy a safc and make it run good

A logging setup is about $80 for a used palm and the cables. You plug the cable in a spot right by the fuse box inside the car. Search on ebay for a package deal, there is a guy that has been selling them. Its a cheap insurance policy and everyone on here will tell you to get one if you plan on modding.
What octane fuel have you been using?
And Redwan, just cause it was rebuilt doesn't mean your turbo couldn't be blown. I've heard of brand new turbo's blowing, so it could happen. If you are worried about your headgasket, do a compression test and post your results. Is there coolant in your oil?

i checked the oil and no coolant, thank god, but however the turbo was blown..i have pretty happy...

Unplugging the wastegate is a fast and easy way to practically double your stock boost level, so ya it is pretty common.. but definitely NOT safe, especially if you want your engine to last. You already have a stock boost controller hooked up, but you can't change boost level with that. Well you can a bit, look in the free mod section on this site to find out how. So just plug that line back in and your car will be back at the factory boost level, but unfortunately.. its going to feel alot slower now =(

I dont have a logger and the problem is Valve seals cause with the cat on after 30 seconds it is white smoke. with the cat chopped off (did that yesterday) it is blue smoke which tells me it is oil burning. but still when I goose the throttle i get a gray/blue mix of smoke. did a leak down test and the head gasket is good. Could really bad valve seals cause that much oil to go into the exhaust and make the turbo blow it out in a grey blue color of smoke????

whats up guys--i didn't know how to post a new thread so i'm going to ask during this thread because it has to do with this topic.

alright, so i have a 1997 eclipse gst with a 90 6-bolt swap. after the swap, i pulled off the shop lot and everything was fine; had oil pressure, engine ran nice and warm, boost was fine. all of a sudden, my oil guage pinned to low and hasn't shown oil pressure since and my car will get hot around turns and also my exhaust fumes are like a blueish grey. the smoke would be most excessive during accleration. no antifreeze in oil and no oil in antifreeze. the one time when i ran the car, it got hot, so i quick shut down, then there was like a smoke-type thing coming from the (if youre looking at the engine head on) right side of the engine. and i took off the oil cap to see if there was a "bad HG" type residue on it and there wasn't, however, there was thin smoke coming out so i smelled it and it smelled like, i dunno how to describe it; like what you smell like after a bon fire. all fluid levels are fine.

oh, and also, i am having a hard time keeping the engine running. my starter is shot, so i do alot of pop starting and even that has become quite a chore.

sorry about the novel, i just wanted to get all information posted

How is your turbo getting oil, from the stock location? I had this problem from over-oiling from the filter housing. Other than thats its got to be either your turbo seals or valve stem seals.

Yes, it receives oil from the stock location....would the bad valve stem seals and/or turbo seals cause my engine to not stay running and show no oil pressure and get hot?

i know that this is an old post......but just to help anyone that runs into a similar problem i just want to say that the problem was resolved and it ended up being a blown oil seal on a brand new turbo...because i did not put a restrictor in my oil feed line to my garrett turbo................thanks

Yeah do dat compression test. Or u can pull a spark plug an crank it an see if u got sum nasty stuff squirtin out

im gettin alot of smoke, especially when im idle-ing at alight or startup. and my car usually idles around 1200rpm, now its around 800-850 rpm. i changed my oil and made sure the oil level was high enough. the exhaust smells rich in either oil or fuel i cant tell. any suggestions on what i should do here?

Check your oil for coolant. Smell your coolant if theres any smell of gas its a head gasket. Do a compression test.
