I'm going for the 180* thermostats but not sure which one to get. I know Gates make quality parts as it shows in their timing belts. What about Stants? Also what's the brand Autozone sells? I heard some people have trouble with them or the opening is smaller, restricting flow. If anything else I'll just go with STM's 170* thermostat and adjust it with the offset.

If you get a Stant spend the extra 3 bucks and get the Super Stant. The construction on it is 10 times better than their standard t-stat. I run a 180* stant super stat and in the winter it barely gets above 184* which is not even enough to update my fuel trims. You've got to watch out for that.

The OEM recommended stat for a '98 4G63 is 180*.

The Stant part number we sell at my workplace for it is 14078, it sells for $16.98. It's a 56mm stat, which is 4mm larger than the 1G stat (Stant p/n 13869).

You mean for it to go into closed loop? I don't have to worry about that since I'm 2g. Has to be above 180* F. You can compensate for it on DSMLink's coolant offset.

Can anyone tell me why they have different Tstats? One of them measures 2 3/16" x 47/64" x 1 11/16" x 1 3/16" while the other measures 2 11/32" x 33/64" x 1 3/4" x 1 7/64". They're regular and OE type respectively.

stick with the oem they are the best, once i bought an autozone one(on a sunday because my thermostat housing cracked and dealer was closed) and it sucked it ran too cool even though they said it was a direct replacment. the next day i bought a mitsu stat and changed it out.
