I searched around but couldn't get a good answer to my question so here it is.
Wondering what brand you guys that have slim fans run.
I was looking at getting a 12" mishimoto fan to replace my oem fan that went out and wanted to some feedback on wether thisis a good fan to get or to go with another and which one.
Also i already cut off the harness off the old fan and would like a simple quick way to re-wire it to the new fan when i get it as these come with 2 wires.
Thanks for any help.

Well, I have not had the results I WANT with any slim fan on my DD 2g, but i can say that the SPAL's i used were really nice. I never had a mishimoto but i've heard good things about them.

Other than that. go SPAL... OR go junkyard OEM if you like your AC and live somewhere that gets hot.. I went back to OEM fans from slim lines and had to make all new IC pipes just to get my A/C back to where i could use it daily, but i like my creature comforts, if you're willing to give them up then just about any decent brand fan will do jsut fine

I got two slim fans from ebay 10" and 12" fan wired them into the stock harnesses and they work just fine. They out flow the stock fans and sound like 747 is about to take off. I got them both for 60 dollars combined.

I only have 3 ebay parts on my car. J-pipe, MBC, and slim fans. the rest is all vendors.

Can you post a link to the ones you got?

I have 3 eBay fans and they are not that good. They don't seem to flow a lot of air and I want something that flows better.

So you're saying it isn't ideal to use slim fans for using ac everyday ?
I don't use my ac every day, although it works excellent, but i was wondering if it would replace it with no problems. What is the cons to using ac everyday with a slim fan on the ac side ?

yes, that's what i'm saying...Even with 2 properly mounted fans set by the ECU to come on early the car would overheat in any weather over 75* or so when i ran the A/C (it's always hot and humid in our summers here) I could run the AC for about 5 - 10 minutes before she would overheat (even on the highway)

I went back to OEM fans and the needle has NEVER risen above the halfway point since... In my ECU logging i'm seeing temps of 195 - 199 tops on hot days with OEM fans. But with slims i would get as hot as 205 with out the AC and with the fans running on the "high" circuit and both coming on early and together at all times.

Made some new IC pipes to fit the OEM fan back in and i'm always rolling with the windows up, A/C cranked and the music playing :D

The fact that slim lines are not "shrouded" to pull air through the largest radiator area is what really makes them suck. It's not all about CFM it's about moving air past as much of the radiator as possible all at the same time for max cooling, and without custom shrouds that just don't happen with slimmies

Glenn is right. When I put my FMIC on I took all the a/c crap off the car.

Awesome thank you so much for that excellent explanation glenn.
I think i'm set now.

Cool, glad to be of help.. Shrouds for slim lines are something i've really been thinking about starting to produce, but I really need to get my own box and pan brake so i can do some nice bending on sheet metal because My heat shields and everything would just be that much nicer looking if i could bend some of the angles instead of cutting and welding the whole seam where i need a 90* edge that's nice.

Honestly though if my guy don't get my website back up and udated with all the new stuff i've made i'm going to lose my ass sitting on all these DSM parts i'm making. Sold as much as i could locally but i rely on the website to bring in the steady bread while I go out and sell my custom services and painting business around town daily. well i'm getting OT as hell..LOL sorry, but i'm anxious to get my site up, get my status up to supporting evendor and then able to unveil the new site here on tuners! I CAN"T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, nothing beats the OEM fans but if you must, SPAL would be the best. I would go no smaller than 12s. Out of all the ones that I've tried, other than stock being the best, spal 12" takes second.

Yeah Glen, some nice shrouds would be nice. I haven't over heated yet with my new FMIC but then again I haven't used my A/C either.

Wish you the best of luck with that Glenn, i know you'll make it. :thumb:

I have a 2nd question, the wiring on the oem harness has 2 blue and 2 black wires, wondering how would you go about wiring them up to the 2 wires on slim fans ?

i just installed my mishimoto today, pretty easy to install. i hope i wired it correctly. the harness right next to the fan had 3 blue (one with black stripe, one all blue, one with white stripe) and a black. i wired the blue/black and the black to the black mishimoto wire, and the blue/white and blue to the blue mishimoto wire. i think thats right :)

What i did was test them with a volt meter, then when i figured out what was ground and what was high (don't remember on the colors) i wired them both up to the high circuit for the best cooling i could get.. I actually still have the OEM fans hoked to only run on high circuit as well (done through the haltech)

I think when you turn the A/C on both circuits go to "high" so that would be a good way to tell what to hook them up to, but depending on your management and the wiring you may have to play with it a bit to make the fans come on exactly when you want them to and at whatever speed... Thats' one issue i have anymore is knowing much about the OEM wiring since a lot of what i do is based around getting rid of OEM wires and replacing the harness with the stand alones harness.. I USE to do them through the OEM harness but being that the wires are old and brittle on these cars after 10-15 years of use and heat, I mainly try and talk my customers into going with the new harness in the engine bay and will only wire through the factory one if they really want it that way for sleeper apeal... Get a cheap digital voltmeter if you're low on cash and play with the fan wires and you'll know exactly what you're doing when you see the 2 seperate circuit's outputs.... It's funny that i can't remember half that stuff like OEM wire colors after messing with them for this long, but give me 2 minutes and a voltmeter and i can tell you exactly what to do... I think all the problematic porsche club cars have ried my brain... err no, never mind, it's the DSM that fried it, the porsches are still out running LOL LOL

I've got a Proform 12" fan I got from Amazon working alongside one OEM fan and have no overheating problems even with A/C. Outside temps are pretty high too: was sat in traffic a couple of days ago in 99F temps and coolant temps were normal. In fact the outside temp sensor on my A/C console was reporting 108F for a while although I think that is mainly due to where the sensor is placed.

Not bad. I am also running an oem fan and a slim fan for the ac and i have no overheating issues either, with or without the a/c on. I will be replacing the other fan for a slim fan as well later on, mainly just for a cleaner spacier look.

I live in arizona. The ambient temps 1-2 feet off of the road surface are 130* easily. On my galant vr4 it took a passenger side stock fan, a slim puller, and a pusher fan to keep me below 220* in traffic with a big front mount. I will be putting a supra side mount on my talon to prevent this. Also A/C removal isn't an option here, so it has to pull air through the condenser then the radiator. The 4" thick front mount was to much to add. I had 2 slim fans and they did nothing, they were fal's.

Since I needed room for my wastegate, I moved the standard fan to the front of the radiator which required a 10" fan I think, and for peace of mind I bought an 8" fan that runs off the A/C switch.

I don't have A/C, I have a big front mount. In hot days I've never had a problem so far and if I know the car is going to sit for awhile, I'll push the A/C button and have the second fan come on. I also wired it up so that the fans are on high all the time.

The fans I bought were generic ones from Summit Racing. Spent $110 I think and got them the next day.

Anyone using the shrouded combo from Mishimoto?

I've ran a mishimoto slim on the a/c side for a while now. Had no trouble last summer, but this summer I am overheating.

I am changing the headgasket in a few weeks, but if I am still having trouble, I may give the shrouded combo a try.

I ran the single OEM fan with no A/C fan for a little while. I was able to run the A/C and not over heat. Right now I am running the A/C fan as a slim/main fan. I am planning on getting an ebay fan for the A/C.

I think when you turn the A/C on both circuits go to "high" so that would be a good way to tell what to hook them up to

This is the way they are set up from the factory for a 2G:

Relay side:

The low speed circiut for the radiator fan is triggered off pin 21 of the ECU, its a Green w/black stripe wire. I think its triggered at 206*F

The low speed condenser circiut is triggered by the AC switch, its a Green w/orange stripe wire.

The high speed circiut for both fans is triggered by pin 20 of the ECU, it is also a green w/orange stripe wire. I think its triggered at 212*F

On the fan side they are as follows:

Radiator fan low speed: Black = ground, white w/black stripe = power
Radiator fan high speed: blue w/ green stripe = ground, white w/blue stripe = power
Condenser low speed: blue w/black stripe = ground, blue = power
Condenser high speed: black = ground, blue w/ white stripe = power

This is according to my 96 factory service manual.

dsmj89

you said you are running slim line on the ac fan (driver side)?

That vrspeed lower pipe (new one that is long enough) is hitting the stock fan even with all the trimming I did. (I have bigger radiator which pushes it closer)

so when both fans are on it's hitting and makes an awful noise.

Which fan did you end up going with?

As stated in my thread redturboeclipse, i ended up going with a mishimoto 12" fan. Works great and have no problems whatsoever overheating.
The car runs cool at normal operating temps at all times.
Overall i am satisfied for the price i paid. I don't even think i will ever get a aluminum radiator for 2 reasons, 1 - they are thicker and push things closer and create less space as your case, and 2 - i have no need for one as my car runs cool as is.
I say it's a great product for the price and would recommend it.

Right now I only run one fan, it's the oem main fan. My car's a/c doesnt work, but all the components are in place. I've sat in traffic in 100*+ without a problem, logger shows temps of 195-205. I have a good working a/c system on my 90 talon that I'm going to swap to my 92... eventually LOL. But I plan on running one of these spal fans if I can't get my intercooler pipe to fit with the oem a/c fan.

That looks like a plug and play to the link you posted but i doubt it is.
I also plan to replace my engine fan later down the road with a known good fan as the spal as well, mainly just for the additional space and cleaner look.
