Which muffler

I currently have a 3" aluminized catback from NAPA. I press bent it, but you cant tell at all because of the way I bent them. Only cost me 50 bucks and I welded on an ebay fart can (apexi n1 style). sounds good.

im going to order the mandrel bends and weld them up for a 3" ss catback with a magnaflow muffler. Then I'm going to paint the muffler flat black and weld on stock looking tips. I dont feel like getting messed with by the police this year. I only got one exhaust ticket and that was on a road block. I dont want to give cops any reason to pull me over. Car will be quiet except for WOT. Who goes WOT in front of cops anyways?

That's one reason I went with dual tips. They are a bit larger than stock but...I never knew you could get a ticket for ANY aftermarket exhaust, even one Cole Muffler sells!!

Sorry to bring back this from the dead....So by reading all of these maybe I'll go with the 3" and the Magnaflow, and hollowed cat. Two questions, does taking the cat out always mean you'll get creep? And two, for a 3", does the rear suspension have to be dropped?

I have a custom 3" on my Talon DL. Its ok, JUST OK as far as workmanship goes. You dont have to do anything to the suspension to get the exhaust on. However, i do recommend a 3" Pacesetter downpipe, catco hi-flow racing cat, a cutout resonator and a muffler. The bend going over the rear axle is a bizzznitch tho, thats gonna be the hardest part. I recommend making the shop size up the piping that you bring them for that bend, and MAKE THEM USE FLANGES to put the bends together...it will turn out better. I didnt have them use flanges cause' they said they could do a better job just welding it all together. It sounds pretty high end for the type of exhaust i put together. Edelbrock 5525 is a good muffler, i will say it over and over again.

So far as I know the greddy evo II muffler is one of the quietest out there (compared to the N1 and such)..... I would say you are looking for a cutout though :)

Here's what a 40 series Flowmaster muffler w/ a dual tip looks like.
I DO NOT recomend this muffler. Sounds like crap @ WOT.

HOLY CRAP!! Ugh, those welds look nasty. It looks like someone stuck gum on there. Hopefully they hold better than they look. :barf:

i hope they do too jesus there is so much metal in nice balls LOL oh wellatleast its after the muffler i guess so you hear the sound of it

If you have 3" Diam. Piping it DOES NOT matter if it is Mandrel or Pressbent. The piping is larger enough it does not suffice the flow at all. I have a total of TWO bends in my entire exhaust. Mandrel only helps if it is smaller than 3" and with alot of curves, angles etc....I used to work at a local Exhaust Shop and I am at them all the time.

Why even upgrade your exhaust period if you are going to do this? For the time and effort I wouldnt think it would be worth it. It's not just the pipe size, it's how it bottle necks at all of the bends, along with restricting the flow with the ridges that pressbending makes.

If you are going to do something, do it right the first time.

seriously... think about it, when you've done everything you can do to your car, will you be happy with the press bend exhaust you have? you know its things like that that will keep you awake at night thinking "wtf was i thinking?!"

3" pressbent exhaust only costs a shop about 10-20 in metal and a muffler... get a ebay muffler and have them do a 3" turboback no cat and supply your own ebay .88$ muffler and wahalla you ot a 25$ 3" exhaust

just a quick note on hollowing out cats...

quoted from Sport Compact Car "Suck, Squish, Bang, Blow: Part 2 Improving Suck and Blow or the Old In and Out"

"Whatever you do, do not remove or gut out the catalytic converter on your street car. The monolithic, straight through design of modern 3-way catalytic converters is usually quite free flowing on most modern sport compact cars, producing at the most, only a pound or two of extra backpressure. A gutted cat can actually hurt power as the empty box can cause flow stagnation, which effectively shortens the length of the moving gas column in the exhaust pipe. The empty box can also reduce important flow velocity. This can be felt as a loss in bottom end power.
Because of these factors, some of our project cars have actually gained power with the addition of a cat...
When changing a factory cat for a larger high flowing one, consider that Random Technology and Pace Setter make replacement cats with 3-inch or even larger inlets and outlets."

I many not agree 100% with them saying dont remove it at all (they have legal resposibilities to not tell half the tuning world that reads SCC to remove your cats).. but going to a high flow one is an option.. if you are planning on gutting it id say dont do it.. b/c the part about causing flow stagnation is 100% true.. (im currently taking fluid mechanics at the University of Akron for my Mechanical Engineering degree... this checks out with the laws of Fluid mechanics).. if you are going to remove it and are afraid of visual inspections take the heat shield or cat body and cut it out and weld it on over top of the straight through pipe.. looks like there is a cat that with a quick glance.. from the side of the car on the ground..

here is a link to the SCC article quoted above.. very informal as SCC always is.. http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/tech/9912scc_ssbbpart2/index.html

another alternative is to take your cat off, cut it in half and tear out the crap on the inside and then put it around your new 3" piping. it requires some work, but it is doable. this way you get the best of both worlds.

My exhaust is getting bent up as we speak

Im just worried about boost spikes and creep...

By the way, awesome video scobel, I apreciate that alot :thumb: Sounds cool as well.

basically what i tried to say although very awkwardly.. :D yours clears it up a lil

I gave up and built my own exhaust. Flanges from RRE: Turbo, Downpipe, flex section, High flow Cat from Catco, 2.5 inch 304ss tubing and mandrel bends from JC Whitney finished off with a 2.5" Otto Racing muffler (AKA large SS glass pack). All the formentioned yealds 2.5" internal waste gate O2 eliminator down pipe, 2.5 high flow exhaust with a wonderful low growl and great flow for my 16G to breathe through. All hanging on gutter spikes bent and welded to the tube in factory origional locations.

No..haven't you been paying attention?? Magnaflow Magnaflow Magnaflow!! :thumb: :rocks: :thumb: :rocks:

I dont know man, when was the last time that you looked at the cut away of a 40series. When i went down to the local muffler shop they had a cut away of the 40 and it looks WAY to restrictive for me to ever put it onto a turbo vehicle. Now i would put one of the 40s on my V8 in a heart beat because thats where they are suppost to go :D . Oh well i will be ordering my megan 3'' down pipe and the Dynomax race muffler and see what we have from there. If it sounds crappy i am only down $100 for a entire catback because i have a buddy who is the manager at Midas  . I guess i will try and post up a sound clip when i am done. And to be quite honest when i heard your sound clip i wasnt to thrilled with the sound, but that could have been the recorders falt, or i could have been my delicate ears HAHA.

The 40 series is by FLOWMASTER. MAGNAFLOW'S are fine mufflers and I have 1 on order. The DYNOMAX ULTRA FLOW #17223 is the highest flowing muffler available, barring the 6" long RACE ONLY for "class" racing, that you can buy for the street. The DYNOMAX 3" in/out 6" canister muffler flows more than a 3" straight pipe as it opens to 4" in the muffler. It is LOUD. The "highest flowing"
muffler proof can be found on www.starquestclub.com. I just got up to feed the cat and it's back to bed. Mark
