I'm getting a 2.5 inch turbo back exhaust bent up for me at my local muffler shop. Its alot cheaper, and its instant, which I like :) Anyways, I will be going cat-less, I'm going to hollow it out, so if I ever get a visual inspection, I'll pass. I'm now looking for mufflers. I do want a quiet car, but don't want to loose too much performance. I've been looking at the Borla, but I doubt that will be too quiet. Of course I dont want anything fart can sounding, and I'd prefer not to have a 5" muffler tip. Something semi-quiet with a nice deep tone to it. Thanks guys

If you plan on a turbo upgrade from the 14b....Go 3". I went 3" Turbo-Back on my 2g with no cat. Sounds great. Low deep tone with a nice gurgle that MagnaFlow is famous for.

The muffler is the MagnaFlow Race Series 3" Inlet 14" Long 4" Angled Cut Tip with Mirror Finish.

It is actually pretty quite under 3K rpms. Depending on RPM on the highway it is also quite. But at WOT it sounds like a jet taking off.

Pretty quiet. Lots of varieties. Around $100 for a polished stainless steel straight through muffler with a lifetime warranty.

All of the "race series" (straight through) mufflers come with a 4" tip. If that's too big for you, you can buy them without a tip and leave it or put your own one on there. Or maybe you could put on one of those neon lights that wraps around the tip ;)

Backnblack, you got your post in there while I was writing mine! And you've got the same exact muffler as me! I've never seen anyone else with it. Most people seem to go with the round can, or the one with a 7" long tip. You have excellent taste.

Why thank you. You have very good taste also. I was only going to go with a oval style. Only kind I like. This is rather long and the tip is kind of big for my taste. But it really grew on me. I havn't seen it on another 2G either. Yours looks good too :thumb:

Gotta love that sound

finally someone else with the same muffler as me too!!! havent seen any around here......Is pretty quiet till you get on it and then she lets loose....love it!! wouldnt buy any thing else.....

Thanks guys, I really like that magnaflow also. The tip size is ok for me, I just said that because I didnt want anything outrageous. How much should I look to spend for a MF?

what ever you do make sure you don't get crush bent pipes like backnblack. If your going to go all out and get a 3" make sure their mandrel and bent properly. as for a muffler, their all pretty good. THey might make different noises but your not going to know what it sounds like till its actually on your car so its up to you. If sounds really matters to you then i guess you can look more into them, but just get one off ebay for 20-60 and put that on. I personally don't think it makes a difference so itsall up to you

my old setup i had a 3" inlet and 3" outlet Borla XR1 muffler and at idle it was very quiet almost stocklike. And at WOT it sounded really nice very low tone.

If you have 3" Diam. Piping it DOES NOT matter if it is Mandrel or Pressbent. The piping is larger enough it does not suffice the flow at all. I have a total of TWO bends in my entire exhaust. Mandrel only helps if it is smaller than 3" and with alot of curves, angles etc....I used to work at a local Exhaust Shop and I am at them all the time.

Does it look like it would matter on my setup? Not at all.

Yeah i totally agree with you on your exhaust setup. I mean maybe if you had everything maxed out to the last degree and changed to a 3" mandrel bent setup i bet you would proly gain 1-2 hp at the crank LOL

not to be different or anything but i've got the apexi n1 exhaust full race no cat and i must say that it is fairly quite but then agian its got a 90mm tip i think or maybe its the 115m but if you want to spend the money i really enjoy it but your just buying the name. my friend got a bent pipe at a muffler shop w/ his stock cat still restricting and he got the same effect that i got atleast the noticable effect but how many people can say that there exhaust can out flow a swear pipe :thumb:

BacknBlack92ESi,
Do you have the single or double walled magnaflow muffler?

I love the way the thermal R&D exhaust sounds. My friends got one on his 1g with the 3in catback and no cat (however, it reduces to 2.5 or something to attach to stock cat housing). I think his car is relatively quite until he gets on it, then its real deep and throaty. He gets compliments on the sound from people on the street all the time. They roll down their window and they're like, "Damn, that sounds nice, what kind of exhaust is that???"

Good ol Hwy 100

if you are gonna get pressbent get 3" so it'll at least flow like a 2.5 if you have crazy bends in it... go to ebay and get a muffler that you like... most dsm's sound the same... exhaust note will depend on what turbo you are running too... they will all sound deep and somewhat quiet at idle, then when you get on it you get the blattttt loud neck breaking sound that we all love

One of the tuners WISEMEN, ANCONOVER, Is building a custom 3" mandrel bent system for me. It will have a 4"x22" resonater in the "B" pipe and I chose a Magnaflow 5"x8"x18" body, 3" inle and dual 3" outlets. If the fit is tight the outlets will be my tips. Having a large volume muffler body will reduce the sound level. Really looking foreward to it. Mark

whats the difference between the single and double walled magnaflows?

I believe the double wall refers to the tips which would prevent them from becoming discolored with soot and other crud in the exhaust. mark

whats the difference between the single and double walled magnaflows?

Just what it sounds like. Single wall is a single piece of metal. Double wall is 2 pieces of metal thick for the tip. The metal goes out away from the muffler, and then wraps around and does a 180 back towards the muffler. Kinda hard to explain. Go look at pictures on the Magnaflow website and you should be able to tell the difference.

Only single walls are compatible with the Magnaflow silencer. That's one of the reasons I chose a single wall. Although I've never gotten the silencer and don't feel I need one.

Ok, I would like to shed some light here. I went with the Edelbrock RPM Series 5525. Its a good sounding muffler and NOBODY has any complaints about its sound, even some of my critical Honda people. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/mufflers.html. Best of all, its not shiney and round either!! I painted mine flat black because i got tired of exhaust tickets!! It makes it LESS visible to the untrained eye. Hopefully this link works for all that are interested. As for the pipes, if you want mandrel bends, purchase them from Jegs or Summit. Please, make the shop use flanges on your pipes too. Welds suck, leak, and crack. :barf:

I just built my system a few weeks ago using 2 1/2" mandrel pipe, magnaflow cat, and Imco (flowmaster knockoff) two chamber muffler. It has a nice low rumble at idle, and screams in the upper r's. My butt dyno showed more hp gain than I thought I would get.

Now, before anyone bashes me for going 2 1/2", know that it was a strict budget deal and once I get the down pipe finished it will have cost me less that $300...besides, I don't plan to set any land speed or h.p. records with this car!

Hey man it's your ride, all unique! I just got my 3" today. I am going for quiet, with a 4"x18" resonator along with a Magnaflow 5"x8"x18" w/dual 2.5" outlets/tips-straight thru. Mark
