This winter I plan on rebuilding a head for my car. I have another winter beater so downtime is not a problem for me. I have a 6 bolt head in my room and i also have the 7 bolt head on my car. I've looked at which head is better flow-wise and hp-wise and I've been reading mixed "reviews" which head is better, 1g or 2g?

I have read that the 1g flows better at the top end becasue of bigger ports, and suffers because the runners angle into the valve. The 2g head net's more tq because of the smaller runners and has a better shot at the valves, correct?

I would like to rebuild my 7 bolt head and use that, just for ease of install and parts, but if the 1g really flows so much more, then I'll use that.

As for my goals, i am looking for an 11 second car this next summer. i will be getting the following upgrades this winter as well:

JMF SMIM
BC or DKS 272
1g tb
mls gasket
arp headstuds
a bigger turbo (min. of a 50 trim)
3g revised lifters
3" electric cutout
restalled torque converter

Please let me know which is, or, would be better. Thanks

You can hit 11s on a pretty close to stock head.

IMO sell the 6bolt head and use that money to port your 2g head. Just be sure to keep your 1g Intake Manifold and throttle body. Also keep in mind, I was told on MLS gasket you will need some machining done in order for it to seal properly.

That's what i want to do, just use my head, but not if the 1g head is oh-so-much--better. What if I don't port out the 2g head, though (which i probably will) which one is better?

I don't know why it says i have a 9.9999 sec. car. I've tried to change it, but no luck. My e.t. is 12.319 just for refrence.

for an mls gasket i was told that the head and block have to be squeaky clean, is there more to it than that?

Well you've got to get your head resurfaced, which, you would want to do anyways. But I remember a few friends mentioning that you have to have the block shaved a little bit as well.

As far as the heads go, I don't think it's anything that will make a huge noticeable difference. I still say just port the 2g head. :D Just keep in mind you'll might need some bigger gaskets, depending how much bigger you go.

Def port the 2G head and yes you'll need bigger gaskets AND you'll def wanna shave the block down just to make sure you get a better seal.

Port the 2G head guy, i'll be the shit.:thumb:

Yup. The way I look at it, if the block will be out of the car, go ahead and shave it down and get the MLS. Otherwise, if you won't be boosting much past 20psi and don't feel like pulling the block out, just go OEM and get the head resurfaced.

The 6-bolt head has a larger intake port, but the pathway the air takes to get to the combustion chamber has a sharper angle than found in the 7-bolt head. The 7-bolt head, while having smaller intake ports, has a more direct pathway, which leads to a higher intake velocity. If I was going to port and polish, or had a choice between either, I'd choose the 7-bolt. The reason being, the 6-bolt may net you a slightly higher peak horsepower, but the 7-bolt will give you more area under the curve, which in reality is more useful while driving. When Modified Magazine built their project 2g AWD Talon, they did a 6-bolt stroker, but kept the 7-bolt head, and just built that for the reason I stated. If you're unsure as to whether I know what I'm talking about, Modified mag is where I found that little piece of info regarding the 2g head.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm gonna stick with my 7 bolt head and build that up. Once that is running, I'll see how long the stock bottom end can take the 11 second quarter miles haha.

I wasn't planning on taking out my bottom end on my car. I would really like to keep it in there. Is ther any headgasket's that are comparable to an mls or an mls that the block doesn't have to be resurfaced? For refrence, I will be boosting above 20psi, hopefully in the high 20's. That is not something I would like to take out...the bottom end build is next winter...

Thanks again.
