Next winter i am going to be building my motor completly, and i was wondering what would be a better setup for my head? I will be buying the parts through out the year so i have plenty of time and would like to get the most reliable parts but nothing that is outrageuos. i will be running 272's and would like to see if you guys had opinions on a good setup. my goal is to run low 11's maybe break into 10's. I have supporting mods an will probably be running a 50 trim or somthing similar. I have seen other setups with like 280's but i don't want just a Track car. thanks again.

as far as springs an retainers what would u guys recommend? and do you think i should port the head an get 1mm oversized valves or is a that a bit much for a street car?

I don't think going 1mm over is much for a street car. I wouldn't advise going oversized unless you need too, as your just wasting money. The stock size valves flow pretty well (for what they are). I would say to clean up the bowl area of the head and the casting marks. As far as springs and retainers, BC makes a nice setup for a pretty good price. Are you on any kind of tight budget or just looking for good stuff at decent prices? (I was going to recommend Kiggly behive springs but they're $450 compared to BC's which are under $250)

well i read up on the kiggly springs but they are a bit pricy. im not on a tight budget but i would like to have decnt stuff for a reasonable price

I second that on a good street car. But for the best advice:

How much power do you want to make?
What predominant form of driving/racing would you be doing with it?
Is it a daily driver?

If your wanting to break some ten's on a street car your gonna need more than a .50, unless you are planning for some spray.

The BC272 are very streetable, I would get the 1mm valves and open up that head a tad while I was at it, I'm in the high 11's with a GOOD trap speed on a 16g @ 25psi do mostley to the head!!

Well i was looking for about 400whp. I was going to rebuild the bottom end, but i was doing some searching on the forums and found some other related articles saying that i should not rebuild the bottom end. That the stock bottom end should be enough for what i want to accomplish. I will be driving at track for the most part, Also its not my DD but i drive about once a week and on the weekends.

the oversized valves are not needed and over kill. do some reading on porting threads around here and you will find the best methods and areas for porting the head. as far as springs and retainers, you could also get a set of evo 8/9 springs and retainers as they are very light (the retainers are titanium) and they can handle 272's all day long. they can also be had very cheap. i just picked up a set of evo8 springs and retainers for 35 bucks.

I did a little research myself before I got a head done. I got a set some comp 272's and was told that oem springs and retainers arent a must for that size cam and will hold up fine even at high rpms..

Search a little bit around the forums and you will find all the answers you need. 272's are a streetable cam....and the evo8 springs and retainers work well with them as stated above. a huge amount of porting is overkill...just clean up your head and install the standard valves. With a little work to the head you will be happy.

You didn't specify if you were shooting for 400hp on pump or race gas. If we're assuming pump on a 50 trim, the only things i can add are plan on getting a good sheetmetal intake mani, port and polish your head, your choice of valvetrain for your 272s. As far as turbo selection, i'd encourage you to think about Holsets, particularly the HX-35 variations for what you're shooting for. They don't cost much, have some of the most efficient compressors for their size, and in most cases, spool a little quicker than comparable compressors in the same flow range. And they don't cost a lot, which always helps a DSMers pockets. Do a search. You might be suprised.

Well i was looking for that on pump gas. Thanks for refering the other link. I looked through an its about what i am shooting for,but if my stock spring and retainers will hold BC 272's i will probably get the turbo along with dsm link and have it for this spring. I was under the inpression that i really had to build the head in order to get a decent amount of power. I was going to wait to buy the turbo till the build was done but i will probably get it in a couple weeks. what do you guys think? And what do you guys think i could safely boost without arp head studs i wanted to get it tuned at about 25psi but not sure if thats too much on the head.

ARP Head studs and a MLS head gasket will be a must for running high boost pressures on a daily driver. Some people run with stock studs/gasket just fine, but for peace of mind and prevention of tearing your head back off in a year or less is well worth it IMHO. Bigger turbo + more boost = increased cylinder pressures, therefore it would seem logical to build your engine around that idea.
