EVO VIII ecu's are also starting to catch on with the 1g. evolutionm.com has a lot of info on it. I am personally trying the EVO ecu myself.

As for e-manage,some people like it,some dont. Dsmlink is way more user friendly. I knew a guy that had e-manage and all he would say is that he has a 15psi map for "cruising" and 20 psi map for "race." I vote Dsmlink.

Are you positve you don't already have an EPROM? Besides, it's fairly cheap to have the 1g non EPROM ECU converted to EPROM by the guys at ECMTuning, Inc. and they'll also fix up the board as well.

how do you know if it is eprom what do you look for

so i guess ill go dsm link thanks guys

there is a chip about an inch long that is on the board. it has numbers on it and usually a mitsubishi sign if its still factory. If its socketed then the chip can be removed.
chip is in the bottom right hand corner it is black

socketed ecu. The dsmlink chip may look different. when they socket them, they put that extra work on there and then there is another place for the chip to go where it can be remove or installed by hand. the factory chips are soldered in.

here is an ecu that is not eprom but is turbo, see no chip in the bottom right corner. of course v3 must be better than v2 but idk what so much better about it. go to there website and consider Vlite it is less expensive because he doesnt include a lot of the things that people wouldnt normaly use for street use, vs all out drag use.

V3 is the only one you can purchace new unles you go V3 lite. On the ECU case there will also be an "E" on the sticker as well stating it's EPROM. Still check regardless to be sure.

You do have other options as well such as the Ostrich+Jackle combination, DSMap, burn your own chips or have chips made.

The red chip in the second picture is V3 and is also on an EPROM converted board from a 1g NON EPROM ECU

Just go with the link. It is very popular with lots of support for it so you will rarely have an issue you can't figure out.

I run jackal and I really like it. The whole setup with sensors runs around $200. You'll need an eprom ECU, but you will with link as well.

You can read more about it here
DS-MAP.NET • Index page

If you are happy with the mass air sensor, you can edit your own binaries as well.

First Generation DSM EPROM Editing
If you get really deep into that, the ecu will do whatever you want it to.

It's really not that hard. The equipment you use for either can be used in other cars as well. Link is stuck to DSMs, and I don't like their approach to speed density.

lots of choices. Depends on your budget and how much you want to delve in. If you're really scared about it, link can help spoon feed you. With a little help most people have no problems with any of the more difficult options.

+1000 for jackal and ostrich combo

I recently set up jackal in my 1g. There are base maps on the forums (link above) that will get you running and idling no problem. There are really no cons to this set up. I consider my self a tuning noob and it was basically plug and play. and real time tuning is nice, just like aem standalone.

plus you can ditch the maf in the trash
o and no lift shift, studderbox, and phantom knock options are incredibly easy to use and adjust

link v3 seems like a knock off of what jackal has had for years and give out free!, v2 is megasquirt with a bigger price tag imo
