hey guys. new to the forum but have been reading up on dsm for awhile now. sold my 2000 bmw 323ci for something with alil more power and wanted a japanese import to get into the local scene here. i have 2 choices.

1st is 97 eclipse gsx with 74k miles (black/tan) but has a new tranny and driveshaft. already modded with filter, forced performance 16g and kit, greddy type s, plugs and wires both ngk (8mm and 7es respectively.) 255 pump and 550 injectors. running rich due to no fuel management

2nd is a 98 eclipse gsx with 58k miles (white/grey) but completely stock.

im leaning towards the stock because white is the original color i wanted and well..a stock motor is sure as hell less beat than a modified one. both are the same price and pretty local. both buyers agreed to a 14 day return period so i can take itto my mechanic have him check compression / crank play or anything of that nature.

your replies are much appreciated.

Make sure to check for shaft play on the turbo of both cars along with the compression and crank play, get witch ever one is in better condition, i bet itll be the 98. O and you may wanna test drive them to check the trannies out.

You will do fine with the stock one. A modded car is most likely a beat on one. This is what I had check on mine:

Crankshaft Endplay
Compression test

Any other things such as brakes, suspension, etc are worthwhile also, but those two things I listed are the most important. Check the oil cap also. Its a good indication of the frequency of oil changes and quality of oil used. Less deposits the better. The best thing I ever did was buy a stock DSM.

The 98 has less mileage, plus you dont have to worry about the quality of someone else's work on the car... this way you'll start from zero, modd it the way you like and want... experience with it your self and have fun...

Go for the 98GSX :thumb:

great advise guys. look forward to learning more and more from this site. me and the seller have an agreement for a 14 day return period. so i can take it to my mechanic and have him check it out. i already have the compression check in line, along with the other menial tasks like brakes and fluids. is removing the oilpan to check the crank hard at all? ihear to check for improper crank walk you just have to remove the oil pan and give the crank a wiggle.

had no one noticied he compared a 97 gsx wit a 98......? The 98 would definetly be better as there was a huge increase in cases for cranwalk w/ 97's. Good luck n happy modding

98 for sure. Better color combo too, tan interior is :thumbdown

Let us know how the inspection goes.

If you go for the 98 get them to either deduct for a T-Belt change or have it done for you, if it hasn't been done already.:thumb:

Could that be because the 97 is black?

Next thing ya know Chris will be PM'ing you to find out were the 97 is sitting. ;) :thumb:
