Hi, having problems with my car running rich and spitting and sputtering when you hit the gas. I have been told to check the map and afm. Where are these at on my car? Its a 90 talon tsi awd manual. I feel retarted asking but I want to get my car done!! Please any help or pictures would be awsome!

So I have done a little looking and it looks like the afm and map are aftermarket parts, Correct me if I am wrong.

I'm guessing the AFM sensor is the MAF, there isn't a MAP sensor on a 1G unless you've switched to Speed Density and then you wouldn't have a MAF.

To build on what Steve said, MAF or MAS, mass airflow sensor, located before the inlet snorkel of your turbo. There are aftermarket system that replace you stock MAS. GM MAF (blow through setup) replaced the stock system (the MAS circled in red in the picture), or speed density, mentioned above.

It would help a great deal if you can post a pictture of your engine bay so we can see if it is aftermarket or stock.

There are also several reason for you car to run rich or sputter (might be retarding of timing due to knock or boost leak). I would start with doing a vacuum boost leak test:

Check you spark plugs to check the condition of them.

I would also check you o2 sensor and check the condition

Thanks yea I knew what the maf was but some one told me to check the map or afm on my car and I had never heard of them. Thanks again!

I put brand new g series platnium ngks in checked fuel pump, The only thing I can think of is when i unplug the maf it doesnt change anything. So im assuming its the problem right now going to try and use one that is known to be good.

Generally we haven't have much luck with platinum or iridium plugs in the turbo DSM's. They don't seem to hold up to boost. It's not like it hard to change the plugs on a DSM so why go to the expense when the regular copper plugs work best, are cheap, and easy to get at.

The turbo v6 cars use platinum plugs from the factory but that more do to with wanting 60k change intervals since getting at the rear plugs requires removing most of the intake. They also don't run as much boost as a DSM.
