Where can I tap into for my oil temp. guage?

Okay, I looked all over the forums and vfaq's and cant find an anwser, seams like all the threds that mite have an anwser are for 2gs and not a 1g like mine.

I have bought a glowshift guage pod for my 91 eclipse gst, it came with three gauges of my choice so I got a boost volt and oil temp. gauges. The boost and volt gauges went in fine work great.
My question is where can I tap into the block or somewhere for the sensor that came with the oil temputure gauge?
I really dont want to have to buy a t fitting from the glowshift web site if i dont have too.

1G is no different than 2G. Weld a bung to the oil pan for the sending unit.

If I were doing one, I'd probably put it at the rear of the sump, instead of the front. Also, if I were you, I would have opted for an oil pressure gauge LONG before a volt gauge or an oil temp gauge. Just my .02.

Thats one thing im tring to avoid is having to tap into the oil pan, im not a very good welder and I dont want to have to drain my oil and take the oil pan of again, I hated it the last time...
Thats why I asked if there was anouther place.

You can use an aftermarket oil pressure gauge while retaining the factory one.

Yeah, sorry, I removed your post because they were links regaurding installing a pressure gauge, not a temp gauge. I removed it to try to prevent confusion.

Yes, it's possible to have the stock oil pressure gauge and an aftermarket oil temp gauge at the same time. The two are unrelated in regards to installation.

I don't know if any other location is suitable for the temp sending unit. Everyone that I know uses the sump of the pan.

Like I said, I'd recommend a pressure gauge anyway. No pan removal, no welding, and it's a more useful gauge IMO.

I'm using one of the unused plugs on the OFH.
I've got both my oil pressure and temp sensors installed via a remote mount set up.

Thanks for the clear up there @99gst I was about to get confused real bad, another note, I already have the oil temp gauge it came with the gauge pod and gauge setup I bought so I am going to use it. I dont plan on doing to much more modification engine wise so I think I can just keep the stock oil pressure and run the oil temp. that i got.

Now @Blurred Talon, what exactly is the OFH, and were is it located at. Also is it the same on my 1g as your 2g?

OFH= OIL FILTER HOUSING

You will see plugs unused in the OFH and you can tap into them just like "Blurred talon" said. 1G and 2G.

Good point. For an absolute reading the pan would be ideal.

For someone looking to install a temp sensor before a pressure sensor, this may not be a big deal.

Just trying to let the OP know there is an option in the OFH if he goes that route.
He can also splice into the feed line of the cooler. That may give a better reading.

I'm sure the pan is a much better place for a temp sensor but for me, this was easiest for now.

The OFH is great to use for a pressure sensor, just don't mount the sensor right to it, the vibrations can cause it to break and then dump all your oil out.
Next time I'm out working on my car I will have to get a picture of my remote set up.

Ok, @blurred, so what exactly is needed to be done to install my TEMPUTURE sensor to the OFH. that's what I am asking about, I thought the mod cleared that up. Anyhow, so I can't just unscrew the plug that's there and screw the sensor in that spot?

Autometer Pressure and temperature sending units are the same thread size and pitch. So yes it will fit. Oil Temperature is going to be pointless to monitor at the OFH where its dropped 10-15C. The point of a oil temp gauge is to ensure you dont have high oil temps causing the oil to thin and damage the bearings. As 99GSTracer stated youll get more important engine information if you get an oil pressure gauge. i actually saved my motor in my Cobra when my Vortech feed line blew off and i saw the drop in pressure on the gauge. i was able to kill the motor prior to meltdown.

I just want to know how to install my oil temp gauge. Like I said I do not plan on doing any internal modifications to the engine or changing the turbo, being said that. The stock OIL PRESSURE gauge will be enough for me, I just wanted too add an OIL TEMP. gauge since I had the choice when I bought the gauge pod to pick what three I got. Now please enough with the shoulda coulda. I didn't I got an oil temp. So if someone would like to answer my question then, please and thank you.

One way is to put a T, and put it on the Stock location of the Pressure sensor.
Now. If you don't want to get a T,,,,,,, THEN choose any Hole from the Housing and get a fitting to install it.
Another way is to drill a hole and tap it with a 3/8 and just screw it in.

The answer to your question is post #2. But you aren't willing to put forth the effort to do it properly. So now you're asking for ways to do it improperly? If so, I'd be happy to fabricate plenty of useless and improper solutions for you.

Solutions in order from best to worst:

1) Return your gauge and buy a more useful one that doesn't require a complicated install.

2) Properly install the gauge that you have (yes, this requires removing your oil pan and welding).

3) Continue looking for an answer that doesn't exist, which will eventually lead you to incorrect information or a less-than-par solution.


We aren't telling you this stuff to piss you off. We're simply giving you the best advice that we can.

I wouldnt put too much trust in the stock gauges....

I agree. The factory oil pressure gauge is only useful for letting you know if you have oil pressure or not. It's not very accurate at all in determining the actual amount of oil pressure.

I used a remote line off one of the unused ports.
The plugs and stock pressure sensor are not NPT threads though, they are BSPT so the thread count is off by 1. You can get an adapter from Autometer.

However, like 99GSTRacer is saying, the correct way is to drop the pan and weld a bung into it.

Wouldn't that be measuring the cooled temp, not the peak temp?
