I was looking at the upgrade paths for basic h/p stage 1, and i was wondering cause im a newbie when it comes to these things, to what step could i get to before it would require some tuning done?

agreed. a tune is always a welcomed mod. you get the most out of your modifications with a tune especially with turbo car.

^^ These guys are right, it wouldnt hurt to start messing around with that even now. However, you should definitely at least get some kind of logging software, be it a pocket logger, evoscan or DSMlink or any other method you find suitable and get used to logging and understanding what everything is. I wish I had when I first got into the DSM game. Im kickin myself in the ass now. Now, when you start upgrading your fuel system and start to want to up the boost, that is when your really going to NEED to start tuning. If I were you I would invest in link now, that way its out of the way and you can play around with it and get to know the software.

In order to tune, I would at the very minimum have the software, some sort of logging software/standalone logger, and a wideband o2 sensor. I use Evoscan for logging and it has the option to log wideband o2, however, you need the necessary port to use it.

Well if you want to get the most out out your dsm, you should probly invest in dsmlink..Even with a tune on a completly stock system you will get moe oomph out of your car..

DSM's stock have very rich fuel maps and at WOT don't run as efficient as it could. However, this is moreso a safety precaution than anything.

What I would do is read this, you'll learn alot more: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...tuning-guide-beginner-intermediate-tuner.html

get link first. make sure the car is top notch as far as maintenance. then do all bolt on such as exhaust down pipe, fmic, bov, pipe, and that should be a good for stage one mod. later, upgrade fuel systen, and turbo and you should be all set for stage 2, the after i would do a rebuild. you want to go more when you get that power.

I would honestly say get ECMlink first if your actually going to get into tuning. I got all my stage 1 mods without ECMLink so far since I was able to find it quick and easy and honestly it isn't really worth it. The mods could be maximizing power and efficiency much more with a tune rather than bolting it on no matter what you end up adding.

Link can be first but you will need an eprom ecu(which you might have) and a wideband o2 to use it properly. If no eprom then the entire package with wideband will run you about $900. Unless you buy a set up on the classifieds here.

If your not ready for that step, then id say intake, exhaust, boost gauge, mbc can all be done with no tuning. That can be had for about $500+ and will really bring the car alive.

But tuning will allow you to get the most from every mod. Plus pitching the maf with v3 will give you a little extra by itself.

This is all amusing you are finished with the required maintenance, which is big first mod. A running car is always faster then one on jackstands.

thanks for all the answers guys i think first ill go with maintnence then exhaust/intake then look into getting DSMLink :hellyeah:

These cars are Tuners, so tuning is kinds a big deal for them:thumb:. DSMLink will be your best bang for your buck mod you do. And since you own the tuning program, you can retune after every other mod to get max perfomance at no extra charge.

Quick question? Could someone explain the wideband o2 sensor in a little more detail? Does it replace the stock sensor and if so which one? how is it used to tune? I've got a lot of knowledge on turning a wrench but lack in the tunimg department.

Having a way to tune would make it so that you can safely maximize your current parts. When you decide to up the boost, you'll be able to up it safely & make it last. I say: DSMLink, AEM Wideband & AEM Truboost. All 3 things will net you a safe way to bring up the boost & possibly swap turbos down the line.
