Ok so my car runs but will no idle right when I hit the gas it spits and sputters. The fans are on all the time and will not turn off black smoke pours out of the tail pipe. I have looked at everything I can think of. I need some help. O sorry it’s a 1995 eclipse gs-t

Check all those, black smoke is probably running really rich, or burning oil. If your burning oil could be a head gasket or compression. Did you just buy this car? Did it start doing it all of the sudden?

i have had it for 4 or 5 months i was driving one day and someone cut me off so i had to slam on my brakes and then it died got it towed to my house and put a o2 in it and plugs when i got the car i had to put a turbo on it. it ran fine till the day that happened

this is go to sound stupid but how do i do a a boost leak test this is my first turbo car

just a question, but did you possibly stomp on the throttle after slamming your brakes? i know with my road rage thats usually whats happens, if so i would check the turbo

for a stock turbo u can pick up the rubber pipe cap and a compressor fitting at ace hard ware or a similar store cost around 10 bucks to make plug up your compressor with the clamp tight and start the compressor with no air in the tank watch the gauge on the tank dont go over around 14-16 psi if u still have stock piping the leak will be very noticeable if no leak your turbo is toast good luck bro

OK thanks i will try all of that but just got my friend to bring his tester over and test my car it came up with mass or volume air modular u guy thank can have any thing to do with it

The only sure way to know if a turbo is bad is to check whether or not there is shaft play or oil leaking, discounting a boost leak does not mean blown turbo necessarily.

I think your telling me that your car had a check engine light. This is important information that should have been posted right away.

From your unusual sentence I believe your telling me that it indicated a problem with your mass airflow sensor. If so, yeah, that could absolutely cause this problem.

Please post the actual code that your friend got with his diagnostic tool.

That would be the MAF. Yep, sounds like you need an airflow sensor. As soon as I read your decription of your problem, I was going to suggest your MAF. I just replaced one on my car :(

Just to straighten out a couple facts being thrown around here:

Black smoke=Metal on metal, or burning oil after detonation(Thats why blow by=black smoke)

Blue smoke=burning oil during detonation or before

White smoke= burning coolant/water

hope this helps.

Some times if you dont have a blow-off valve recirculating it causes it to sputter... It does with mine, so i always have it recirculating.

So if i understand this correctly, it started after you changed plugs. Could you have knocked a plug wire loose from the coil or maybe switched the wires around by accident? Go over everything you touched just before this happened and you should see something small that you overlooked. These kinds of things happen to everyone at some point. Nobody is perfect and youre an idiot if you think otherwise.

Black smoke is gas smoke ie: too much fuel, rich condition. A misreading of airflow could cause this. Again, as I said earlier leading me to point the finger at the MAF.

Not to nit-pick, but "blow-by" usually refers to gases working past the rings and into the crankcase, and therefore never even reaching the exhaust.

As mentioned, black smoke comes from too much fuel in the air/fuel mixture (rich), which causes an excess of carbon leftovers (think soot) that gets passed out the exhaust.

BTW - Not all of it makes it out the car's rear. For those that think that running excessively rich is no big deal, well...

OK, ok so there are a lot of reasons why you blow smoke. You guys are right, but a bad piston ring or any excessive metal on metal will also cause the black tarnish of doom.
