I picked up a 1990 galant gsx a week ago in a non running form. I was told that it lost compression. My question is that when i crank it over it seems to crank slow. The started was bad so i replaced it along with the plugs. It now cranks a little better. when i checked the spark one has a little bit of blue spark and another had a yellowish orange spark. What could i be looking at? I was told that it was getting 90-100psi of compression in all four cylinders.

ok will change that. How do i check the CAS and be able to tell if it is bad?

what could cause it to not get good spark?

if you have the timing cover off get the engine at TDC all points as if you were to do a timing belt, (thats how i do it to be sure) and on the cas you will see a notch on the CAS and gear.

the notch should point to the front of the car.

With the motor cranking slow i decided to try and crank it manually and it took all i had to turn it. My guess is that it is something internal.

Check a service manual for the correct plug gap. Turbo 4g63 is 0.28-.032, but the galant gsx is a NA 4g63. I do not know if they're the same, can some NA guys chime in?

Did not try that, would that m,ake a big difference?

Well yes. There would be no compression with the plugs out, so the engine should spin very easily. Like one finger easily. If it does spin easily then you would know that there's something in your cylinders stopping it from turning, such as fluid, or some massive compression. If it's still hard to turn with the plugs out, then it needs a rebuild.

took the plugs out and tried turning it but was the same. I know theres fuel in the oil now also. I took the ecu out and going t tkae it to a dealer to get checked but im running out of ideas.

If theres any dsmer's in my area please feel free to help me out here.

if it is very difficult to turn the engine over with the plugs out than there might be someting else goin on it should turn easy as pie, but if it feels like somthing is holding it back it might have wiped out the journals for the cams in the head/crank and rod bearings wiped out/wrist pin bore wiped out.

Well as of right now im only going to be able to find out whats wrong with it, I found out that i may be losing my job.
I dont want to give up on this thing.

does anyone know if i could utilize this motor?

Before you get all bummed out, have you checked the alternator? Eleven point nine volts is far from a charged battery, and that would explain slow cranking and weak spark. Furthermore I've seen engines that felt siezed when you put a half inch breaker bar on the crank pulley, but when you cut off the alternator belt, they fire right up.

everything seems to be fine, I hooked my girlfriends car up to it and tried cranking it and made it crank faster but still nothing.

you realize 11.9 is considered dead ? recharge it, it should be able to hold 12.6+ if its brand new. your battery's dead.
