Monroe,
Georgia
Back story: a few months back i finally traded "leslie," the 98 rs in my profile. The guy gave me a poorly built AWD 95 Talon Tsi and $1000. Pretty good deal IMO.
PROS:
came with PLENTY of aftermarket parts:
Mishimoto radiator
eBay Td05 20g turbo
HUGE (not sure what size) VR Speed Intercooler
slotted/drilled rotors&carbon fiber pads
strut braces all around
16" OZ Rally's (trade me!!)
HKS turbo timer
Glowshift PSI gauge
Poly mounts
Ebay BOV
EBAY MBC (i havent installed it yet, check valve busted and i'm not 100% sure how it's installed. tips please)
Eclipse body (slowly collecting talon parts)
CONS:.
200K Miles
Didn't run when i got it. risky, but i figured i could do some damage with an extra $1000. Now, i'm no pro, but the guy obviously never had any automotive experience... Everything he touched turned to orange RTV... i found this nasty orange goop used as a replacement for nearly every gasket in the engine--oil pan, valve cover, oil return (gasket AND as a replacement for a stripped bolt...), and even as a filler between incorrectly sized braided steel oil lines (ruining the seals in about 10' of braided steel), leading to some scarring and mad oil leaks
He installed the 20G on stock injectors (fuel cut=bad)
one incorrectly sized head bolt (nearly stripped the block threads before i noticed)
2.75" exhaust (me made a huge point when i bought it saying "this girl is QUIET, bro..." it sounds like a ricer.)
fuel tank started leaking BAD
no lower rear timing belt cover, so the CPS wire rubbed raw and left me stranded.
Nevada tint=Georgia cop magnet
Rattle can primer paint job
2gb eclipse body (WHYYYYYYY???)
He tried a rear wing delete, now the bondo is chipping and the hatch is rusting.
Halfway installed a remote door lock (I ended up pulling about 30' of birdnest and miswired relays out of the dash...)
SO ANYWAYS, I got it running in about 3 weeks for around $400. I fixed All the major engine problems i listed, and continued on with a few upgrades.
New fuel system:
walbro 255
-6an lines back to front
Evo 550 Injectors (Pretty sure they're 550's. blue?)
AEM AFPR
Evo 16G turbo (3k spool, 13 psi wastegate. not pushing it due to the mileage)
innovate wideband 02 (not installed yet, gonna wait until i get the new exhaust)
Incoming from extreme psi:
Oil filter housing and gasket (the old one leaks BAAADDD)
Oil pressure gauge
Column cluster
NOW, HERE'S the kicker.
I recently bought a 300hp 6 bolt to build and swap in. Just started dissasemly, so i'm pretty early on in that process. I'm taking my time, because i don't want a low-budget build, however, even more so, i don't have $5k to drop on a motor at one time.
The motor how i got it:
Evo 550 Injectors
Evo 16G turbo
(^^i installed these into the 7 bolt already)
Stock internals
He included Eagle H-beam rods
Built head:
HKS 272 cams
kiggly springs
titanium retainers
5-angle valve job
GOALS FOR THE BUILD:
400-450 HP daily driver
93 pump gas
Like i said, the budget is flexible, so I'm not really holding back. It's a daily, so i'm going for some decent reliability. Time is on my side since the car is running fine for now.
The next two steps i'm committing to (unless you talk me out of it) is dsmlink w/speed density and turbo-back 3" exhaust. Definitely doing a cat delete since my county doesn't have emissions (and it's a 95)
QUESTIONS/ TL;DR
1) What steps should i take to prep a the car for a 400-450HP 6-bolt swap?
2)Concerning DSMlink---is this something I can conservatively tune myself? I'd say i have an average engineering student-level computer knowledge. (I know my way around programs, but not too great when it comes to coding/in-depth troubleshooting) I want it for the current setup because the bigger injectors have lead to awful gas mileage and terribly rich exhaust.
3) The 6bolt flywheel was cracked to hell, should i go OEM or lightweight Aluminum?
4) Injector size--- 550's seem decent right now, but how about for the new build? i've done a little research, and i've found that it's a "the bigger the better" type thing, yet fuel injector clinic has a calculator?? why?
5) Speed Density sounds like a decent decision, but what are the advantages of other systems?
6) Turbo decisions-- my little brother is doing a similar build, but he got a deal on a hy35 turbo. obviously, his GST is going to have some issues competing with the awd, but how can i one-up him on this?
7) compression ratios: every time i do some research on this topic, it ends with "well, what's the end-goal?" so... what IS my end-goal?? what would be best for a ~450HP all-around daily driver?
8) On the same note, what pisons should i choose if i go Eagle H-Beams on a stock crack?
Other small issues with the car:
VERY hard start. I'm thinking it's the coolant temp Sensor, i have a bare sensor wire around the thermostat, but i still can't find where it goes...
Burning rich--- like i said, i havent tuned it since the bigger injectors, but is there anything i can do in the meantime before dsmlink? I'm getting around 17 MPG, and if i let it warm up at idle for more than a few minutes, theres actually a sut mark on the concrete behind the exhaust...
MOST IMPORTANTLY:: the dumbest noob question there is... how do you time the 4g63? I know how install the new belts, line up the timing marks, and time it according to TDC, but, hypothetically, what if i wanted to delay timing a few degrees? Isn't this beneficial in some situations?
Sorry for the wall, but i'm pretty passionate about this car, just as all of you are. Respond freely, ANY and ALL advice is greatly appreciated.
I'll add pictures to the profile soon.
