need a little help with what this is called exactly. i call it a crank shaft pully, but according to the parts guy that i called there is no such thing. :hmm: he though it might be called an idle pully but apparently thats not it either

its for a 420a motor, its the part that alt. belt goes around as well as the ac/ps belt goes around it. it looks like 2 wheels stuck together a smaller one attached to a larger one, both have ribs for the belts. the alt. goes to the larger one and the other to the smaller

you have to remove it to get to the water pump/timing belt

it is held in by the crank bolt?

any help is appreciated

+1 aka harmonic balancer if its Oreillys.. if your buying parts avoid the guy that told you they dont exist. I hate when jo blow is behind a parts counter and cant figure out what part your talking about by using commen sense. And there is a crank pulley but its inside the timing cover and drives the Timing belt. Its also referred to as a crank gear and many other things depending on the literature.

Crankshaft sprocket ;)

LOL see.. thats part of being a good parts man knowing what the customer needs and it helps to have automotive background. Every good mechanic has a good parts man. I would suggest finding one locally and sticking with him. It will save you headaches in the future. This guy really just said "it doesnt exist?" sounds like an autozone motto LOL

I hate when people work there and say it doesn't exist. I mean come on you have a computer to assist you look for the part, what more can you ask for. I wouldn't mind working there but i earn more than i would working at an autozone helping people out much better than those bums.
Anywho sorry for getting off topic LOL.

Ive worked at a few national chain stores. Its embarassing working with some of the idiots that are used to saying "would you like frys with that?" I will admit that autozone if you dont use the proper literature it will say it "doesnt exist" its a matter of lingo when searching. For example in AZ computer an A/C orfice tube is called an expansion valve even on older cars that dont have an expansion valve. Its odd I remember trying to find parts when I first started there. I found it easier to interchange Oreillys part numbers from the Melon at times :)

But honestly if the OP walked into a parts store and told them he wanted a crankshaft pulley what normal human being wouldnt know what hes talking about? Thats just absurd. Ive had guys bring in proportioning valves and call them kanooter valves LOL

1. A Crankshaft PULLEY is a SOLID pulley system.

2. A Harmonic dampener is a Crank Pulley with a Rubber isolator between the 2 parts of the pulley to reduces engine Vibrations to the crank

3. A crankshaft SPROCKET is what the timing belt rides on.

They are 3 different things.

The 420a uses a solid Crank pulley to drive the accesories.

There is a thin amount of dampening material between the inner and outer sections of the pulley, so it falls somewhere in between a full-blown harmonic dampener and just a pulley.

Really? Cause when I did my 420a Timing belt, I had to use a big Gear puller to get the pulley off the crank. If it had any rubber between it you would think I would have ripped it in half. I needed A LOT of Force to get the pulley off the 420a engine.

The 4g63 Harmonic Dampener is bolted to the Crank Sprocket with 4 bolts and NOT press fit onto the crank.

I'm not sure what kind of puller you used, but the only kind I've used pulled on the center hub. Unless it pulled on the outer rim, you wouldn't have noticed anything bizarre. If you take a crowbar and pry between the block and the outer rim of the pulley, you will notice it definitely moves in relation to the center hub.
