New Westminster,
Hey guys, when I start the car and have it on idle, it keeps having this clicking sound. Do you have any idea why it is making this sound? Is it normal? Is it a sign of the car breaking down or is it just normal parts moving in the car? This is my first ride so I don't know much about cars. Here is a video with sound of the clicking. Hopefully this is not a major problem and I can find a way to get rid of the sound.

Both my wifes' and my DSM does it on occasion. The only way to remedy the tick is to replace the lifters with revised ones. Nothing really is hurting, just some ticking noise. If either one of ours was doing it all the time, then I would consider replacing them.

A lot of cars beside's DSM's have lifter tick. I found the easiest way to get rid of it is to add 1/4 of a quart of ATF (tranny fluid) on your next oil change, drive your car for about 50-100 miles and change it again and go back to your old oil. Has worked on dozen's of cars we've had in the shop. It's not hurting anything though.

I'm curious to know what the tranny fluid does to cure the lifter tick. Do you just put in any regular ATF or does it have to be something like the Penn. Syncromesh?

Just any normal ATF will do it. From what I've been taught it's a lot thicker so it coats the cam and lifters better and just gets rid of the noise. I could have my boss get on here and type a 4 page paper on it but I don't think you want that. All's I know is it works and I'm gonna keep doing it til it doesn't.

does the sound come from the top of the motor or from the bottom of the timing belt cover?
2G cars make two different "ticks" one is due to the lifters, the other is caused when the crank trigger plate strikes the crank angle sensor.

But the car was idling with no pressure on the clutch which means it wouldn't be making a ticking sound from that the trigger plate hitting the sensor.

It just seems louder from the wheel well because the hood is closed.

This was not the case with my car. It would tick at the trigger plate on start up.

Not saying it didn't, but then you had some sort of pressure on the crank (mis adjusted clutch or such) that still forced the crank out enough to hit the trigger plate.

Not true.

The plate will hit the sensor without any pressure applied by the clutch.

Rotating forces, accessory belts, and just plain bad luck can all cause the crank to pull forward against the sensor.

I've seen it happen on more than one car.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the tips you have given me.95bLaCkGsTuRbO I will try putting ATF oil on my next oil change. Is there a brand that I should use? Which one did you use?

Also do you think this is a sign that something is wrong or will be wrong in the near future? Or is it just normal sound it makes when the engine is running?

I'm a total newb at this. Perhaps when I have some time, I will get some audio/video with the hood up during the day so you guys can see the parts moving and kinda judge where the sound is coming from.

If it still ticks after your remedy, try replacing them with 3g lifters. If that doesn't work, you have the same problem as my Talon. the rocker arms are causing the tick everytime the cam pushes on them. and those are twice as expensive as lifters

I just used Napa ATF. No particular brand. Lifter tick is normal. My car had it until recently when I put tranny fluid in the oil. With yours being as loud as it is you might wanna use 1/2 quart. But only run the car 100-200 miles then change the oil again.

I had a problem just like this on my old 2g. There are a couple sensors on the firewall to the right side of the intake manifold. When your car is clicking, feel the sensors on the wall. If you can feel one of them clicking, then goto the junkyard and replace the sensor.
