What is an HX-52 like for a daily driver 2.4 ?

I'm putting together a built 1G 2.4L block with a race 2G for my RWD car and I'm trying to decide between an HX-52 and an HX-40. This will be my daily driver but I may take it to the track occasionally.
The motor will also have the following:
  1. A Megasquirt 3
  2. Water/meth injection
  3. Kelford 272's
  4. and I also have NOS that I haven't decided if I'm going to use or not

I just don't know if this combination will be drivable in a city/highway with stop-n-go traffic so I'm looking for the opinions of people with similar setups.

Thankx.

Depends what kind of power you want and when you want it. Compression on the engine? Turbine housing size...etc. HX-52 would most likely be a horrible street turbo choice.

HX-52 is a 800whp capable turbo, probably going to be way too big to be any fun on the street, and especially if your using water/meth which means your probably running pump.

There are quite a few people using HX-40s in BEP housings on their DD and they are enjoying them.

You want a 90+lb/min turbo in your daily driver? Wow.

Look for full boost around 5500+. I'm not sure about you, but I rarely rev my street car above 3500 during daily driving....so you could basically buy a non-turbo anything and it would have the same street manners.

GO with the hx40. The hx52 wont even see hardly any boost in 1st and by about 5500 in second youll see SOME and by third youll hit full boost. an hx40 is even somewhat overkill with a street/strip car. I would honestly go with an HX35 but it is your car. but deffinetly NOT the hx52 in a street setup

HX52 isn't even an option.

All in all what you want is an HX35 considering you wont be pushing either turbo within the efficiency range of them that would suffice going beyond the 35.

Thankx guys. The HX52 is what I originally had my eye on when I first started this build but it just kept looking more and more like a drag only rpm range. The HX40 is pretty much what I had settled on but I will keep the KX35 in mind. I originally had a 1G head but then got a great deal on a 2G head from Gamble so that I could keep the velocity up. Either way I will be making a custom top-mount twin scroll manifold.

I'm figuring that with the twin-scroll, a 2.4L, and a 2G head I should have some decent low-end and reduced lag. The pistons are 8.5 Wiseco's and your right that I will more than likely be running pump. The only e85 is either ~15min north or ~10min south of Austin.

The more I think about this the more I like the HX40 idea. I don't really need full boost around town and if for some reason I do, then a low end shot of NOS will get that boost up quick.

That's the spirit! When i first got the larger turbo i'm running now I didn't think i was going to be able to live with the laggy'ness on the street, but one thing i've found is that a turbo that may not be streetable on a FWD will be more steetable on an AWD - I couldn't spool m7 pt67 in 1st or 2nd in FWD, but now in AWD i can make full boost in all gears ( my original plans were for an HX35 but went with this becayse it fell in my lap without effort and i was able to pay paymentson it)

I too use nitrous for spooing fast when i need it as well as having water injection on tap forwhen i run pump gas (mainly run E85) What's i've come to find though with the traction of AWD is that i hardly ever really "need" to get into the boost range of my turbo which is the same 5500 and up (turbois rated at 750 and can produce 900hp according to PTE)

Although i would like an HX35 or similar (hell i wanna play with a 16g again since i've been on at least t04e sized turbos for ten + years) But either way in AWD the larger turbo can be loaded to spool nicely where in FWD it can't so i would base part of it on your car's type of driveline..

but either way a 50- 90 shot will wake a larger turbo up FAST and make it spool like it was a 14b :D (i've ran from 35 to 90 testing spool aid on variouse turbos)

Not to mention the instant torque boost from the bottled gas, it almost makes mt car feel like it's a bad-ass high compression NA car since when that solenoid clicks the sh!t hits the fan instantly, there's no watching/waiting on the spool to be faster, it's instant@! I could have my 57 trim fully spooledto 30psi instantly on a 35-40 shot and anywhere from 75 to 90 shot brings the PTE6776 on just as fast (almost too fast)

I would agree that the HX52 is way too large for a good daily driven turbo, but then again the definition of what's streetable all really comes down to how you area as a driver, what you consider lag and what you want out of the powerband at certain throttle openings or situations.

Some people think a 16g islaggy, and others think that turbos like mine that spool at 5500 RPM are usable on the street (as i now do) it's all about driving in the engines power range as well as having the engine and rest of the combo setup to work together with the blower of your choice!

I probably confused you but was hoping to give a different perspective on your choice either way..best ofluck and when in doubt listen to everytone here.. between this group it's allbeen done, all been tested and everyone's found that sweet spot

and remember, if your under 40 mph in that starion with an hx40, once it spools, YOU ARE SIDEWAYS!!! I had a starion with a 16g and a fat cam and mpfi set up and i went sideways rolling into boost in 2nd at like 35 LOL
