I don't know if this belongs in the newbie forum but it's the only place I'm aloud to post haha.

I purchased my first running DSM a few days ago, a 1gb talon tsi fwd :hellyeah: with basic bolt ons (so hard to find a stock one)

I want to install a turbo timer for when I'm in a hurry so I don't have to wait around with my car while it idles. The problem is the car has a stage 3 clutch and it is my first manual car so I tend to stall it AT LEAST once a day. What would happen if I stalled with a turbo timer installed..? (it has a boost controller pushing 16pounds so I think a turbo timer would help prolong the life of the stock snail) Anyways what would happen if i had a turbo timer installed and I stalled it..?

Any help is appreciated

turbo timers are really only needed if you beat the crap out of your car and then shut it off right away. I usually drive normal going to my house on my road which is fine.

If you stalled, the car would shut off unless you didn't wire in the ebrake wire.

Turbo timer is controlled of the ignition switch, which has nothing to do with stalling.

As Alex stated, turbo timers are completely un needed unless you don't have self control to drive easy before getting to your destination.

In the 5 years of owning my vehicle, I have never needed to let it sit and idle before shutting off and that's because I drive easy before shutting down. My last turbo showed no signs of coking which is what a turbo timer helps prevent by idling.

Besides, having airflow from coasting will cool better than sitting and idling with engine heat trapped under the hood.

To your question as to what a turbo timer will do if you stalled: No it will NOT keep the car running if you stalled it. The car's engine will stop running if you stalled it but if you shut the car off normally as in taking out the key, then it will stay running until the turbo timer shuts it off. On a side note, if you stall your car at least once a day then you should really put your money into a class on how to drive stick and not into a turbo timer. :hmm:

I don't expect it to keep the car running... Just making sure the timer would do something funky like make me wait until the timer was up before I could start again. And for the "Poor driving" I've owned the car for 4 days now and only drove it 3 of those days and it's my first manual... so sorry guys. I'm still a kid and learning give me a break  haha. But thanks for telling me how pointless it would be to get one, now I can put that $200 dollars somewhere else (I was going to order it tonight, well as soon as someone responded with a positive response)

If you feel you need one, by all means get it. If you can control you foot for the last couple miles before your destination then you shouldn't need it. If anything after driving easy to your location, shut the car off after taking the seat belt off and grabbing what ever else you need. Give you that few extra seconds of idle :p

This is all my own opinion. I know that others agree on this subject as well, and there are others who are completely against it too.

There are also more affordable units that do not cost near
$200 I believe the Apex'i unit is around $80?

I stalled out my dad's jetta at least once or twice a day when I was learning to drive stick. And it was a freaking jetta with a stock clutch.

Even after I mastered the jetta, I stalled out my Mirage, and My saturn every so often because they didn't have nearly as much torque as the jetta. It would nearly pull itself. I would say it took me a year or so to get perfect at driving stick. But I was also young, and more often than not, worried about doing something stupider or illegal while driving and getting in trouble with my parents.

But yeah, just take it easy on the last 3-5 miles of your trip. If your trip is less than 3 miles there is no reason what so ever you should be spooling the turbo to max boost anyways. I can get 3 miles down the road before the engine is fully warmed up.

I was going to get the HKS type-1 and with that plus the harness and shipping its like $150 and that one can be controlled automatically buy determining how long it should stay idling the recent driving patterns. Plus it does a bunch of other stuff haha

@Boostin
Thanks for helping my self esteem and the turbo timer topic haha

I have a Blitz turbo timer it works good, just watch out if you turn off your car and the turbo timer is on and you leave it in first gear LOL or if you keep your clutch pushed in, it will turn your starter over.

Agreed turbo timers are not mandatory but nice to have IMO. Ebay has tons of Apexi pen style timer for around $50-$75.

So I can't leave my car in gear with a turbo timer..?

Because last time I relied solely on the E-Brake my car ended up 3 feet away from where I left it so now I leave it in gear AND pull the E-Brake.

Well think about it man.. The motor is still turning, what happends when you leave it in gear and pull your foot off the clutch? Its gonna want to go! No you cant leave the car in gear with a turbo timer. I ONLY use my ebrake and Ive never had a problem. Perhaps you had a problem with your adjustments or the shoes were bad. With both of those in good condition you will have no problem with just the ebrake.

On a side note I have the turbo timer mostly because Im too impatient to just sit there and wait the damn 30 seconds but also on long drives on the highway is when I think they work best. Even though you may not be beating on the car, you're still higher up in the revs and higher revs means more heat. just my .02

No you can not leave your engine running and in gear. That would result in a car driving away.

There are always turbo timers on the classified pages of this and many other DSM sites for 20-50.

It's not needed, but let's say you've got to REALLY go to the bathroom, that last mile or 2 may not be easy on the ride home. Let's say your late for work, that last mile or 2 may not be easy.

A few of these in a row and your no longer thinking about it all the time, and only some times it's getting an easy ride at the end.

DSMers usually love doing things that are "piece of mind" and "insurance-like." If you can find one for 20-30 I'd say grab one. As far as getting one that does "all kinds or stuff" I'd skip it for 150.....

Damn $200? I got my Greddy TT for $40 and it works great. It is a needed thing for me as I use it for the built in voltmeter but more importantly I use it to warm up the car. Start it, reset the ebrake and pull the key. Now she'll warm up in the morning and cool off whenever I get where I'm going.

Turbo Timers are supposed to be hooked up to the E-BRAKE so they only work when the E-BRAKE is up anyways ;)

Haha thanks guys, This is what happens when you don't do your research before posting a question on a forum. If I run in to extra money I'll pick one up
