You need to have an EPROM ECU.

If you don't have one, ECMTuning can convert your ECU to an EPROM.
ECMTuning, Inc.
Next you need to order an ECMlink package.
Full version
Lite version
Here you can see the comparison between the two.

Then you have to have a computer, which you already mentioned. Windows 7 works just fine with ECMlink.
There are some other things we'd recommend you get, such as a wideband o2 sensor, and possibly a MAP and IAT sensor if you want to monitor those or even go speed density. You can search on here for more info about these items, which are recommended, which go better with link, etc.
You need to save $600 and go with dsmap. If you have eprom the only real purchase item you will need it moates ostrich 2.0, Which i think there is still one in the classifieds atm.
Heres a link if you'd like to check it out.

DSMLink is much more user friendly. But its your car, do what you want.
Have you personally used Jackal? I love the ui. The new version of Werewolf is in beta, looks very promising as well.
If you have an EPROM ECU, you need to send it in for socketing service. If you don't, you'll want to send it in for non-EPROM conversion. Or find an EPROM ECU.
Then you can purchase the kit, install, and away you go!

There probably is a lot of preference involved but both just as capable.
I would say you're right there is a lot of preference involved. You may also be right when saying the two are equally capable (I'm ignorant here, thus have no personal opinion), however ECMlink has a distinct advantage that other software doesn't have. Popularity.
Whether it's because it's better in any way (subjective) is irrelevant, but the assistance one receives when purchasing the ECMlink software is second to none.
This. Popularity also means further advancement.

Ok, no more arguing about link vs. jackal. The user can do their research and decide. If they have any specific questions on either package, they can ask.
But just because the thread has link in the title, doesn't mean he can't inform the OP of other options. We just don't need any arguing. We are not elitist here, so we should be able to civilly talk about all options.
I'm tired.
