What are the symthoms of a blown turbo?

Well guys recently today i was driveing and all of a sudden when i press on the gas it like starts to let OUT alot of air ppsssshhhhhh, or can it be my transmission slipin? i have an automatic.
 
The first signs that a turbo is on its way out is excessive shaft play. In worse cases oil can leak past the seals and makes its way into your exhaust creating blue smoke from the tailpipe. If ignored and ran for a length of time you will hear a really loud screaching sound as there is such excessive play that the turbine/compressor wheels may actually be contacting the housings themselves. It barley takes any contact at all to make an extremely huge ruckus. You would know it if you heard it.

If it sounds like air as you are describing, I would do a boost leak test and see what its telling you. Its more than likely a defective BOV, or loose intercooler pipe. Are you able to build boost still? Any difference in running conditions? Hitting fuel Cut?

Well i was doing that automatic shifting thing from first, second and DRIVE, But i only did it a couple times, and also everything seems to be on right everything is tight uicp bov ect...another thing, i lost a gas cap so i went to autozone and bought a regular replacement, does it have to be a certain type of gas cap or something>?
 
No the gas cap should be cool. Ive had two auto trannys go out on me and what they both would do is when you hit the gas at a stop it would just rev up and then you would feel the tranny just grab. Does it feel like its in neutral when its in drive sometimes. I dont think it would be the tranny because you said you can hear a whoosh sound and that means the turbo is spooling and it cant spool like that in neutral.
 
Yea its like an AIR sound, it goes when i press the gas but when i press the gas in a little more it like slows down then that airy sound comes out.

What do you mean starts to let out a lot of air??? you refer to the BOV or what??
My T25 on my 95 GST died at 160k miles.
I could tell like 2 weeks before it died that was going too.
When I was doing a hard pull in 3rd or 4th the turbo started to make at WOT a unusual loud ppppssshhhhhhhh sound(car ran at stock boost) and it wasn't picking up like it should...you could tell, the turbo sounded soo mean but no/little power! :)
Following week of daily driving... my buddy was right behind me and said I was burning oil?(some small amounts of bluish smoke was coming out of my exaust at 3k-4k rpm)
I took the intake and chk for shaft play and it was plenty :D :)
So I would def chk the turbo 1st.

In general it just lets out alot of air that i can hear. i dont know were its comeing from but its sounds like its comeing from passanger side
 
actualy i do remember a friend telling me a small amount of smoke, i think he said blue but not sure was comeing out.
 
My 14b just went out like two weeks ago. Maybe. Pull the intake do a boost leak test and while you're in there check for shaft play. Synthetic oil burns a very light blue, so it might look whiteish.

For what it's worth, when my 14 gave up the ghost, other cars thought I was Spy Hunter. The IC was full of oil and the exhaust housing had some too. I was shooting soot out the back at idle. Smoked at idle, smoked more under throttle.

Also watch that your fingers don't hit the sides of the compressor housing. Mine did and I thought there was no shaft play. There was. The IC was full of oil, as was the drop tube...
