what are some things to Look out for when buying a 2G DSM or 1G

I will also add to rust. As said check for strut towers, but also check all around the wheel arches and the trunk I have seen alot of 2G trunks in very bad shape. Paint fade on the mirrors and rear wing are most common. Look for faded or flaky headlights, fog lights that need new bulbs.

The inside check to see if the driver carpet is stained due to a bad master cylinder. I would also recommend reaching down and seeing if you can push the slave rod towards the drivers side to see how its adjusted. If you cant then it has or will have clutch issues. Take off intake if you can and check for turbo play or for any oil.
 
Wow 3 months and you gave up on your 420A hu? Man you 4g guys work fast. Haha J/K the 420A isn't for the weak at heart. I would say if you are looking at a gst/x and say to yourself "man... that car could be in the fast and furious movies!" then don't buy it. If the timing belt is broken don't buy it. If Paul Walker is selling it don't buy it. Last but not least... if the seller says "I had to splice something into the wiring harness." then avoid it. Good luck with the 4g63!

well my first car was a white eclipse spyder 4g64 97' automatic then i got bored and wanted stick so i got the 420a 5 speed, now i want somethin a bit faster and fun. its not that im giving up on the 420a is fun car too but gsx would be nice :) im compemplating whether i should get another DSM had a few problems with this car 1 after another, in addition i've been hearing about crankwalk in 2g's... my friends gs-t inspired me to get a 4g63

yeah most of the DSM's here are beaten to shit, i know for sure its gonna be a hard find
 
Just keep in mind that they are going to be over a decade old. I would look for what everyone is saying and also check the hoses and any other rubber on the car for cracks like part of the fuel line on some cars depending on mods. the cracks you see on rubber hoses and tires, the more you can make them come down on the price. This is a general rule of thumb for purchasing any car.

unless the owner knows when the last time the timing belt, other belts, and fluids were changed and have dated receipts, its a good bet, if you buy the car, to have all that done at one time and have it tuned or checked out by a shop that knows a lot about these cars as you will probably run into some 'unforseen' problems while fixing the known ones.
 
Rust on the strut towers,on the front fenders,on the rear quarters and another spot that seems to be getting more common is around the rear hatch. Overheating and over boosting which will cause it to blow up as soon as you sign the title and register it haha. Tranny problems are a huge one for sure make sure it goes in and out of all the gears smoothly otherwise they better knock some off the asking price. I've seen a couple of them with bad floor boards so thats a new one to start looking for.
 
in addition to rust, i'd take a quick peek under the dash and look for a mess of poorly installed wiring. That means bare wires, packing tape, spaghetti wiring and generally just lack of attention to detail. If they half-ass wiring, you can bet that they half-assed everything else on the car.
