Weird Whinning Noise

I can't figure out what this noise is. I though it was a wheel bearing at first but its not, it sounds just like police sirens. It happens when the car is decelerating in low rpm/mph range and when i lightly tap the throttle while decelerating. It's almost like the car is winding down.

If its coming from the rear of the car, I bet it is your rear differential. Does it go away when you have a load on the car? Take it to a mechanic and have them check the shims in the rear end, the shims is what sets the difference between contact on the ring and pinion. If these are out of align, they will cause excessive wear on the ring and pinion and also the bearings in the rear housing. Trust me, this can get expensive as i ignored this sound on my '99 Dakota and just spent $1300 for a new rearend.....so this is something you should not ignore. Get it checked ASAP and let us know.

It's def. coming from the front end. Its so weird because I can just tap the throttle the smallest bit and it will make the noise. I thought it could of been the turbo but once the boost kicks in the noise goes away.

When my turbo started to go, it made a very loud, very eerie howling/siren noise (blades rubbing on the housing), but it did it under load. May want to check for shaft play just in case.

My altenator made a whiny noise come to find out the shaft was bent and the bearing was bad so check out that to.

Both dying alternators and failing turbo shafts have been known to make the whining noise. Some people liken it to the sound a supercharger makes.

To check for shaft play, take off the intake hose, stick your fingers into the compressor inlet, grab the nut in the center of the compressor wheel, and try to wiggle it; up and down, side to side, and in and out. If it wiggles in and out, that's a fairly sure sign the turbo is on it's way out. A very negligible amount of side to side play is allowable, since the turbos are oil bearing and need a little movement, but if the compressor wheel moves enough to touch the compressor housing, you may have problems. Check the compressor blades for signs of rubbing on the housing or other damage.
