I have been hearing the sound of like a loose peice of sheet metal on my stock 92 awd tsi, today i put it on the lift and found the noise is most prevalent at the oil pan. It isnt loud actually pretty faint, sound just like a little sheet metal ratel with a little lifter tick, what could this be?

hmmmm. well could be the start of rod knock. or maybe turbo shaft seels blew and are rattling around in the pan. id take the pan off and look.

I'd love to know how this could happen with the turbo still physically intact.

It's possible a balance shaft bearing fell out of the block.

+100 for the balance shaft bearing, the gentleman I bought the car off of just told me he had trouble removing the balance shafts and there were a few pieces of the bearing missing when he took it out, he said he tried to clean as much as he could from the oil pan, He is coming to pick up the car to check it out Monday. I hope that's all it is, and since its just a rattle now, hopefully as long as I don't drive it, we can fix it up!
