I just rebuilt my engine and while it was apart I removed the balance shafts. It was a last minute decision and I didn't want to order a kit and wait so I turned the bearings and cut the rear shaft to make the stubby shaft. I welded the end shut instead of tapping it and screwing a bolt in. Now it idles perfectly but when I rev it between 2k and 3k it rattles pretty loudly. If I hold the throttle steady it's a continuous rattle. It stops when I let off or accelerate. I used a stethoscope and it is coming from the front case somewhere. Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven't has this issue, i always just cut the shaft, tap it, thread a bolt in it than weld the end. Are you sure that you got the bolt holding the gear to the shaft tight, and the timing belt pulley tight? You could also have a loose timing belt tensioner.

Does the stubby shaft need to be cut perfectly so that's balanced? I mean I got it really close but there is a little more mass on one side. Will that matter much?

I've found that it isn't that big of a deal to not have it perfect. Just try to get the cut straight.

I have an update. I removed the t-belt and I was spinning the oil pump pulley with my fingers. I hear a rattle when I do that so I'm pretty sure that's it. But also it will hang up sometimes. Could something be wrong with my pump gears? Is that normal or just a loose stubby shaft? The oil pump is brand new.
