i hear a rattle/bearing noise from the pass trans area, i replaced the throw out bearing last night it still does it. it sounds almost like the same noise when a throw out bearing goes bad, at idle i dont hear it . the engine rpm has to be like 3k or higher to hear it at idle. but if i push clutch in it stops, when im driving i can slightly hear it mosly only on decel. when i accel its quieter, so besides the TOB what could poss make that similar noise and go away when the clutch is pressed in? 95 awd talon tsi

its not the tob, i thought the act one had failed so i replaced last night with an oem one, same noise , dunno if it could be a bearing in the trans or just something rattling in the trans. i hope its just a rattle and nothing serious , ive spent way too much on this car lately.

whatever it is pressing the clutch in makes it quiet so its something that is involved in those moving parts.

This is usually a sign of bad input shaft bearing.

It is actually worn instead of busted.

Guess I need a trans then

When I wiggled the shaft with trans off it didn't have any play and seemed to rotate smoothly .

did you check your fly wheel step? What kind of clutch you runnin? I had a similar problem and it turn out my fly wheel step was incorrect. All clutches uses different fly wheel stepping and .608 to .612. You need to research to see what is the sweet spot for your clutch.

i did add grease ya. im gonna switch from synchromesh to 75-90 synthetic gear oil in the trans today and see if it quiets it down at all , if it was shaft bearing it would have play or sound loud by hand right?

i use gear oil in my trans too which is not recommended by mitsubishi. but mine also makes a rattle noise which is my TOB since its aftermarket. but if your shaft has issues you can just replace the shaft instead of buying a new trans.

You should try to press on the clutch but not all the way just enough to put load on the throw out bearing so your tranny is still engaged and see if the noise is still there. If the noise is still there then its something with the tranny. Synchromesh is a bit thin so that might be the cause of the noise as well. Drain the oil out and look for pieces of metal or any extra large metal flakes, if you don't see anything like that film it up with some good 75-90 and see if the noise is still there.

Itgoes away even if I gently press clutch.only gear oil I found was full synth advanced auto brand 75/90 its rated gl 4 and 5 I hope it won't damage synchros

Is there tension on the clutch fork from the slave cylinder when the clutch is out? I know it may sound dumb, but if there is not enough pressure being applied to the fork when the clutch is out, the fork could be rattling on TOB. Just an idea?

Nate

im gonna check all that in about an hour. i also found lucas 75 40 synthetic that says gl4 and gl5 , im gonna try that. it seems to only happen once the car warms up so i dont know. i cant afford a trans right now so i hope its nothing major..

Order the mt 90 redline oil from Jack's transmissions. If the bottle says gl 5 and gl 4, its gl 5 oil. Or go to Mitsubishi and get the EVO 6 speed oil. Transmissions are expensive to repair or replace. Using the wrong oil is a shure fire way to burn it up.

ok well i put it on the lift. the noise is coming from the rear most part of the trans where the shock fork kinda sits for the suspension. its gotta be a bearing in there or something, i can hear it rattling in that part of the trans while its in neutral and reved up. with the clutch in it goes away but its in that rear most part of the trans right around where there is a circular formation in the trans case.

also the lucas 75/90 seems to have quieted it down a bit but i def still hear it. i dont know if i should worry about it at this point or just drive it for now.. im pretty much out of cash and its my only car so unless i can find a cheap trans and swap it in one day theres not much other option. the noise is right around where the trans drain plug area is

If it goes away even if you press the clutch in lightly with out fully disengaging the tranny from the engine then it might not be your tranny. It's possible that your TOB is making that noise as it lightly touches the pressure plate and as soon as you put a little load on it, it goes away.

Another test you can do is get on the road and while driving in 3rd gear at about 25 mph press the clutch in and shut off the engine but leave the car in gear. This will take the engine noise away and the tires will keep your tranny spinning. If you hear that noise your talking about then its probably something in the tranny. If you don't hear that noise then your tranny is probably fine since its spinning with out making that noise.

i found this , my noise sounds like this i wonder if its whats going on. is it possible to pull the end case off while trans is still bolted in car or no?? If its just this id be real happy http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/dri...-help-diagnose-transmission-noise-videos.html here is a pic i found also. the noise is coming from either the 5th gear part or the VC part now that i see there isnt really bearings in there is has to be the "loose" 5th gear rattle i dunno. i hope so

It's also possible one of your gear sliders or center diff is about to explode. Had same symptoms and then BANG. New shep trans was in the works

so if i pulled the end case off what would i look for to figure that out? i suppose i could just move everything around and see what rattles but if i dont find anything then i dunno? also would your noise go away when clutch was pressed in? Im gonna try the 5th gear test tomorro. From what i read you can just gently push the shifter toward 5th with car running and no clutch and if the noise stops its the 5th gear problem, otherwise i dont know. when i drained the fluid this time and a few days ago no metal shavings came out so i hope its not like yours.also was there any other symptoms yours had? mine shifts smooth as butter and drives nicely. i just have the noise

Try another throw out bearing, I had the same problem installed a new throw out bearing an samething, I took it back exchanged it an it went away it was a faulty throw out bearing brand new from the auto parts, atleast you wolnt be out any more cash that way even if it dosent work, if it dosnt I would say input shaft bearing, hope that helps, let us know what you find out goodluck

Its not the tob its coming from the end case for sure. Just need to determine if its 5th gear rattle or something worse
