i hear a rattle/bearing noise from the pass trans area, i replaced the throw out bearing last night it still does it. it sounds almost like the same noise when a throw out bearing goes bad, at idle i dont hear it . the engine rpm has to be like 3k or higher to hear it at idle. but if i push clutch in it stops, when im driving i can slightly hear it mosly only on decel. when i accel its quieter, so besides the TOB what could poss make that similar noise and go away when the clutch is pressed in? 95 awd talon tsi

well i just tried the test if i hold the idle around 2500-3k it will rattle alot if i try to bump it in any gear without using the clutch the noise goes away untill i go back in neutral. does this sound like the 5th gear rattle problem or something else?

yes it has to be 5th gear shyncro, I been reading a lot lately since I am getting some noise coming from my transmission after installing a welded center diff, if you did the test and it went away and you have no shavings on your oil you should be good is very common on our transmissions to do that rattling noise

ya well just to be safe im pulling the end case today and looking in there. hopefully the other needle bearing will look ok. i got this car only 2 weeks ago and ive already had to buy a new head ,radiator and a ton of other stuff , the only thing that makes me wonder is i hear the rattling 5th is mainly a 1st gen problem?

There is a difference between pressing in the clutch all the way or just barely putting a load on it. If you press the clutch all the way you disengage the tranny from the engine and in a few seconds it stops spinning so any noise coming from the tranny would stop. If you barely press on the clutch just enough to put a load on the TOB then the tranny is still spinning and any noise from the tranny should continue but if the noise goes away then it might be a TOB.

You can pull the cover off with the tranny on the car. Out of all the bolts you will have 2 long ones, they will be on the very bottom. Be careful not to break the seal on the second section in the tranny when you try to remove the cover because taking all those bolts out loosens that too. Just use a flat screw driver and pry on it in few places.

When you take the cover off the reverse synchro might fall out so just place it back. Look inside the cover section that goes over the 5th gear, you should see a wavy ring. I don't know how many miles is on your tranny so you should inspect that ring to see if its not to worn out, if it looks like it is I would strongly suggested replacing it. The raised sections of that ring ride against the reverse synchro holding it tight against 5th/reverse hub assembly. If that ring is broken the lose synchro could cause some rattling noise. Hopefully that's not your case because if that ring broke and went through your tranny it could cause some damage. While you have to cover off check each shaft/gear assembly for play up and down and in and out, they should all be snug with very minimum play.

The test that you did trying to put it in gear with out pushing the clutch is actually not very healthy for your synchros. it puts a lot of stress on the synchros and if you do it to much they will wear out fast. Years ago I've learned that the hard way and fried my 3rd gear synchro kind of doing what you did.

good news. i pulled the case. its the reverse synchro making all this noise. no signs of bearing damage or metal shavings at all. i cant believe that synchro doesnt have anything better to hold it in place besides that goofy spring loaded ring, its still there but thats def what is making the noise. i also called lucas and asked if their 75/90 syn gear oil is ok for GL4. they told me use one quart of that with one quart of syn lucas stabilizer. so i did and it shifts smooth. Ill just ignore the noise since i know its not causing any damage.

You can try to bend that ring a little bit but not much and only bend it in the sections that touch the cover not the synchro. Bend it just enough to put a little more pressure on that synchro to keep it tighter to the hub.

I was thinking of that but i already put it together so ill just deal with the rattle. they should have engineered that with a wider ring to hold it in place..

Any abnormal rattle will cause more wear on parts so I would look in to replacing that ring in the near future. Just order a new one and replacing it when you have time. I've seen trannys where that ring broke and went through the gears cause some teeth to chip or break and that's when everything starts to go bad and fast.

*sigh* i suppose after this season I'll drop my rear diff to check pn things since you sad that. Ive been having annoying gear rattling in the rear end of the car. It's either a dry drive shaft in the rear diff. Or rear diff is close to taking a shit. Remedy? MORE HARD LAUNCHES!

Sometimes replacing something small like a thrust shim inside a center diff can extend the life of a tranny, the same goes for the read diff. I've taken few trannys apart where everything looked good but because one shim broke in the center diff and as it went through the gears it broke few teeth. It must of happened so fast that the roller bearings didn't get pitted. Once one tooth goes it don't take much for a number of others to get broken. Years ago I had one break on my 4th gear but because I didn't want to leave my car on the side of the road I drove it like 10 miles to my house as easy as I could and by then 3 more gears got messed up. I should have trailered the car home but I guess I just didn't care and know enough about what it could do.

In your case I would drain the rear diff oil and replace it. If you find a lot of metal flakes then its probably your shims are wearing out. The more metal flakes you have the faster they wear out because the flakes act like sand paper in there. Once that shim gets tore in half then its pretty much the end if your gears :) if you abuse your drive train on regular basis I would say you should change your gear oil at least every 10-15 thousand miles especially if the tranny has over 75k miles.

if the cars dont rattle from day one off the dealer lot i wonder whats wearing out and making the rattle happen? im gonna try to locate that flex washer thats supposed to press against that synchro and replace it but i have no idea where im gonna even order that from. id actually like to order the synchro and the washer and just stick both in. If anyone knows where to locate one let me know. this is the one making the rattle

My buddy had the same exact problem on his '06 gto and Finally replaced his throwout bearing for the 3rd time in 2 weeks with an OEM one after using 2 aftermarket ones that made the same sound as u describe. He also found his shifter bolts were a little loose. After he fixed those 2 things It went away, granted his car isn't a dsm. But i thought this might help

its that synchro for sure. just need a way to get it to be a bit tighter. no luck finding that wave spring anywhere online so far. or the synchro

i wish parts for these cars were easier to come by. thats the main reason i hesitated to buy this car but i got it anyway. now ive fixed about everything on it in the past 2 weeks. i cant even find a spare block or head in my local area , nobody has anything and i know ill need spares eventually

I usually order all the parts from a local Mitsubishi dealer here in town. If you find one in your area they should be able to get you what you need, they will probably need your vin# to look up tranny parts.

I just called a local dealer in your city, Tom Masano Mitsubishi, 866-916-2714 I spoke with a guy name Doug in their parts department. He couldn't figure out what part I was looking for over the phone but he said if you go there he will show you a picture break down of your tranny and you can show him what pieces you need. Hope this helps.
