i recently redid my intake and ran into all these problems and such, and finally have the car running normally, sorta. after i got rid of all the leaks, i went to start the car, and the first time it didnt start, then the second try (gave it gas while i was starting) it worked. i went to start it today and the same thing happened, three times, the fourth try it finally worked because i floored it. again after that when i went to start it it works fine.

my thoughts: leaving the car sitting there makes the car not have gas in the fuel rail ready, so you have to "flood" the system to get it to start. after leaving it running for a while i started to smell gas, i was sitting in my garage, but the door was open and the tailpipe was pointing towards the door. there might still be some leaks, though i dont know where.

also, the vented 1g bov is very high pitched, even though im only getting to about -5 hg/in, its very loud and high pitched, kinda like its whinning. is this common?

definitely not normal.. what type of IM are you running now?

whats your vac idle? it could possibly be that you disrupted your starter while you were toiling away with the IM... any more diagnosis info?

I ran into a similar starting problem on my 90 TSi AWD i used to own, would never start on the first crank, but on the second turn of the key it fired right up. Ended up being the caps in the ecu were leaking and screwing with the initial fuel system priming. Changed the caps and she started on every turn of the key. As far as the 1g bov whistling, thats generally the sound it makes, but i dont hear it that well due to the fact that im recirc'ed.

just bought an eprom ecu from satan (dealer) cost 1100, brand new, if its the caps, ill slit my throat....did spill some coolant on the starter on accident...LOL... could that be it? i think its just that i leave it sitting for a while and then go to start it, i bet if i tested teh fuel pump with my datalogger before i tried to start it, it would work ever time.

its a dejon smim, stock throttle body, dejon short route uicp, gm 3inch maf, maft, johnny racecar fmic, dejon licp, dejon j pipe, dejon intake, k&n air filter, in that order. but its not like you could find all that info in my vehical profile. changed out the power steering cooler, removed the ac system, i thnk thats it. new battery. -18 to -20 hg/in at idle.

How did you spill coolant on your starter? WTF Thats probably not good for it, go to Advance Auto and get them to check your alternator and starter.

the throttle body was being a bi***, so first i removed the faiv lines because someone told me to, actually a few people did. and then i found out you cant unless you block off the port or something, and its pretty pointless to not have it, so i put the lines back on. both times i did not drain the coolant, so it spilled a little. not that much if you do it fast.

Well...
Everyone's given you great advice so far, but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents, just in case...

It almost sounds like a fuel pressure issue, as you mentioned. I checked your mods list and didn't see an AFPR -- what you're describing almost sounds identical to the problems that people have after installing an AFPR without a fuel pump rewire (fuel pressure drops to near 0 when the car is off, causing you to need to build up fuel pressure every time you start the car).

The fuel you are smelling concerns me -- have you been able to figure out what part of the car it's coming from? Your stock Fuel Pressure Regulator could be bad, or you could have a leak in the fuel line that is causing a big loss in pressure. Have you done a rewire, or any mods that require the fuel pump to be removed or otherwise messed with? A leaky/broken/old fuel pump bracket gasket could cause a fuel smell inside the car.

Hope this helps in narrowing it down...Good luck :)

no mods to the fuel system have been made at this time. i started smelling fuel because of a major boost leak i had when i first redit the intake manifold. i mentioned it only because there might still be a boost leak, even though the gm maf is on the uicp. im not really worried about smelling gas as it was after a long time and wasnt that strong. probably just some exhaust getting into the garage and the car running rich or something.
