Weird Noise with video

This noise just started happening when I was driving and at about 5000rpm my engine just started making this noise. Now it happens at any rpm above 2500rpm. So I was suspecting the timing cover but I took the timing cover off and ran the car with only the water pump/alternator belt on and it still made the noise. I see no signs of rubbing and it sounds like it's internal but I'm not 100%. Anyone have any clue what this could be? Any help would be appreciated.

That sounds like your turbo. I would venture to think either you have a leak, or you will pull your tube and find you have a lot of shaft play.

If you have a mechanics stethescope, you can always have someone rev your engine for you until you hear that sound, and you can test different positions to find the origin of the noise. then go from there.
 
I just checked for shaft play on my 16g and there is little to none, and it doesn't sound like the noise is coming from the turbo area but the engine.
 
sounds like the timing belt is flapping or a bad lifter, check the timing belt tension if that's not it pull the valve cover off and take a look at your springs and lifters for play if it sounds like its coming from the head if it sounds low it could be a rod. one last thought is check your crank pulley and make sure the rubber didn't split
 
I would suppose you could have collapsed a lifter if the lash was not adjusted properly, but normally that would me more apparent during the lower RPM range. It does not really change in how fast it sounds based on engine speed. My first thought was honestly exhaust leak. But take a long screw driver and listen to where you think the problem is with the screw driver held up to your ear. Its a poor mans mechanics stethescope. If its not the turbo, it could be any of a hundred things in your head that are causing the sound. I would start with a boost leak test, then do a compression test and leak down test. Reason being is you can do all those with minimal disassembly of anything in the engine. If you have a rocker or lifter that is not correct, you would hear with by putting a screw driver to the VC and listening. It would sound like chatter. Like some nasty lifter ticks. The balance shaft one isnt something I have experienced before, so I have no idea. Check your timing belt since its easy enough to check while your there. You could have had an auto tensioner failure or any of a million different issues. However to me it still sounds like an exhaust leak or your turbo rubbing.

Do a boost leak test tho, since it could easily be on the intake side.

There is no engine vibration that I can feel.

I did a boost leak test and that turned out good. I also did a compression test and I had 145psi (+ or - a psi or two) across the board. I tried the screwdriver thing but couldn't really pinpoint anything.

Here is a couple more videos the first video is under the hood and I rev the engine but at idle I can also hear a chatter type noise. The second video is by the crankshaft pulley and timing components where the chatter is more noticeable.

It does sound similar to a couple vids on youtube. If it is a spun bs bearing would it be possible to just get new bearings or would I have to install a bs removal kit?
 
How much more vibration would deleting the bs cause, I really do like a smooth engine? Does everyone agree that this sounds like a spun bs bearing, if so I'll pull my oil pan soon?
 
Well if you don't pull anything you'll never know. Go and pull it.

I can't even notice the BS delete on a 1600 4g63T colt I built, so I think you'll be just fine! LOL
 
After listening to the videos a couple times, my thought is one of the two pulleys for the timing belt. It definitely sounds like a pulley squeak to me. When my AC pulley started sqeaking it sounded similar to that. It is at least one place to look into.
 
I've had a 4g61, 4g63, and a 4g63t with BS delete from the previously mentioned 4g61, and every one of them made that noise when the engine was cold. On an 80 degree day, it subsides almost instantly, but when the temprature drops, I have to warm it up for a good 10 minutes or more before I horse on it.

I've just gotten used to keeping it below 2500 rpm on a cold engine. Let us know what you find out, or if you find a fix; I had just settled on the notion that it was caused by straight cut oil pump gears.

Ps. All of these engines had good oil pressure, and ran flawlessly for years until the day I pulled them out for a power upgrade. The 4g63T is still going strong.
 
What's the difficulty of removing the oil pan on an awd 1g? Is there a guide for it, it looks like I would have to remove the downpipe and transfer case.

Yup that's about it. You'll probably need to remove the intermediate axle shaft too. The bearing is right under the edge of the oil pan.
