HI,

I have a 92 Eagle Talon TSI AWD and I just started hearing a weird noise near my Timing Belt. You can only hear it between the RPM's of 1500-3000, after 3000 it goes away. In the video you can see me first hold it for a while at about 3000 RPM and then let go of the throttle and it makes the sound. Please help on this, Ive been making some guesses, but dont want to get to work until I get your guys opinions. Here is the link for the Video: http://home.comcast.net/~redrain19/Engine.wmv

-Thanks

sounds like somthing is viberating possibley the lower timming cover is alittle loose thats my .02 but i think im right

Yea hopefully it is something small like that because the car has been running the same. No loss of power or anything. Ill have to check it up in the air while it is running and see what it might be. Also it kind of sound like its in the upper area too though. Thanks for ur help way2slow4g63.

Good god, which noise? I hear lifters hammering the hell out of things, probably a hideous exhaust leak, and perhaps a tensioner bearing about to die.

Oh, and don't run it without a belt cover. Very bad.

I am going to be replacing all the belts probably in a week or two. Also I will be replacing all the pulleys and tensioner, add the Water pump on that list too. I thought it was an exhaust leak too, but it seems to be coming from the timing belt area, and it can only be heard at 1500-3000 rpm. Thanks for ur suggestions Defiant.

You guys think the water pump would make a noise like that if its going bad? I know I have a coolant leak coming from the driver side underneath the alternator. Im pretty sure it has to be coming from the water pump since thats about the only place where coolant travels around that area. Any more suggestions on the noise?

Installed the Timing Belt Kit and found out that TB Tensioner was leaking and bad. Also the TB Tensioner Pulley Bearing was going bad. Happy it is all good. Just letting you guys know about the noise in my video. If you have a noise that sounds like that, id recc. installing a Timing Belt Kit. :thumb:

I have a question about one of those noises. Not the flapping type of noise, but when you let off, right before your car hits idle, i hear a more of a rumble sound, its louder, like a big "grrrr", what would that be, i have the same noise, but it is off and on, and goes away when it gets warm...usually(it has a mind of its own).

Yea thats the "Grrr" sound im talking about. As soon as I let go off the gas and it goes back to idle right? Id reccomend installing a timing belt kit. The noise was coming from no tension being on the belt since the Hydraulic Tensioner went to crap. It leaked all of the hydraulic fluid out and was no good. Replaced it and noise was gone. Hope this can help...

Is there anyway to take a look at the part, just to see if theres something wrong, that can be identified visually? I don't want to break into this, and a timing belt job is not a prioity right now. Edit: i just listened to the clip again, and my noise is not nearly that loud, and there is none of that flapping noise, my car is very quiet above 3000rpm, just that "grr" from 2500-3000. But still not that loud.

Here is a picture of the timing belt cover:

Take it off and check your Auto Tensioner for any leakage at the top:

Thank you very much, is taking off the cover as simple as removing the inner fender liner, and taking it off, no torque bolts, no special tools? :)

The timing cover is really easy to take off, as long as you have the sockets and wrenches and patience to get to it.

As for the noise, that i think you are talking about, the loud humming noise that is high pitched, take your finger while its running and pull back on the timing cover so it moves away from the cam gears. That was the same noise I was getting when my timing cover was hitting the cam gears.

Also, add some lucas stabilizer for those lifters, they are extremely loud. I would look into getting new exhaust gaskets from the head back to the cat. :)

Sounds how my car sounded right before my timing belt snapped. Good thing you got it replaced before that happened to you. Ended up destorying the belt, water pump, and the tensioner was probaly all to blame.
