I have a weird belt squeal problem. A little info I live in Wisconsin and it just got really cold these past few days. I have never driven a dsm in the wintertime. On to the point when I start my car I get a belt squeal for about 30 seconds, then it goes away. But when I down shift the belt starts squealing until I shift or push the clutch in, and it only happens when I down shift. Im gonna replace the belts but I was just seeing if anyone else had this problem before. Thanks

This is common on dsm's. Either there is not enough tension or the belt is not quite lined up with the grooves on all the pulleys. If you do have the belt of check and make sure all the accessories spin freely.

I have this problem too and its so damn annoying. As I didn't have it when the engine was in my other car. My squealing will usually quit after a few seconds sometimes if its really cold about thirty secs and usually stays away after car warms up. But I took the engine out of my wrecked car and installed it in my current. Used same belt since it was new but used a diff alternator. I can not tighten the belt any further. Tension is maxed out. I changed the belt with the one that was on the engine I yanked out of this car. It got a lil better when i did that but still is a problem. Only thing i can think of doing is buying a more expensive belt or maybe the alternator pulley is a lil bit smaller than my other alternator??

Dude, i'm glad i'm not the only one with this question/problem! I live in Edmonton, AB, Canada, and right now it's about -35 F (no joke)!! The exact same thing happens but i've heard that it's not a big issue. I hope i'm not wrong...?

Most non serpentine vehicles squeal a bit in the winter. Until the engine gets to operating temp. Its pretty normal. You could dress your belts to allow them to bite a bit better on your pulleys, or you can try and tighten em a touch but be careful with that. I would only replace them if they need to be replaced. A powersteering pump going out would normally squeal until operating temp is attained or it would not stop.

It could also be your dampener/crank pulley. Their rubber isolators go bad and come apart and those squeal like a fat chick to cake. Already replaced one myself. A week after buying the car thinking it was just a belt.

Make sure the bearings are good. When they start to go, the fun begins. It may not be the belts.

I've switched my fans off, and get zero to minimal squel even in cold mornings. Power draw & coldness seems to make the noise go on longer. When both fans are roaring, it makes the ugliest sound for at least 2 mins.

My alternator belt has the nasty habit of jumping off when the tensioner bolt slips out of the U shaped notch on the end of the tensioner arm. It seems that it only does this after a WOT pull. Im guessing the additional tension of the aggresive acceleration "sucks" the alternator assembly towards the block and allows the bolt to slip out. Has anyone else experienced this?

in my case it was the pulleys. I ended up replacing most of them because they went bad...
alternator was bad, water pump was bad, starter went, and finally the crankshaft pulley bushing was shot. replaced one at a time and havent had an squealing at all, not even when its moist or cold out.
