belt squeal

I keep getting squealing from under the hood but cant figure out why. About 8 months ago my alternator belt brok with about 145000 miles on the car. I replaced it then about 2 months ago I replaced it again. This time it started squealing really bad I tried to tighten it up but it does not seem to have helped. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the alternator belt he replaced the belt and still it is squealing like crazy. I kept fooling around with it hoping I could figure out what it was but it will not stop. Now the battery seems like it is dying. I was driving to work and if i turned on any accesories the car lights dimmed and the engine seemed like it was bogging down and of course it is still squealing. I took the alternaotr off and took it to pep boys and they said that it seems to be ok it is putting out 13 volts on their machine they said 13 to 16 volts is ok. I also took of the positive terminal while the car was running and it quit running I was told that was one way to test the alternator.

The only other thing that I could think of that It could be is my flex pipe needs replaced it is leaking and I am sure it is sending fumes into the engine compartment. But I would think that if that was the cause then it would not happen when you started the car but wait until it warmed up some. I am going to try the chalk mark on the harmonic balancer and see what I get.

Well I took it to the 3rd mechanic and he says that the cam gaskets are shot and it is leaking oil and that probably is getting onto the belts causing them to slip. Any way he charged me $90 ( which really chaffs me cause he said $40 an hour on the phone and he said $60 an hour when I went to pick up the car.) to tell me that.So I am done with the car I put another new alternator on it advance gave me it cause the original one I got from them quit. It seems like it is running ok so I am gonna sell it and get a newer car.

im getting the same noise....

when starting up the car when its hot outside the squeal comes for the 1st 30secs then goes away.... when its raining and cool outside the noise never goes away..... if the car is idle i hear the sound but when i accelerate it goes away but comes back when i lift my foot off the gas pedal.... i spray a little bit of wd40 on the belts it goes away for a bit but it comes back....

dont know what it can be....

Check the tension on your altenator belt. If it is too tight or too loose, it will squeal and dissapear under acceleration. The squealing may get worse if you continue to allow the belt to slip.

Replace your harmonic balancer. The rim's lost its vulcanized connection to the hub.

Hello I have already posted the problem;em with the car. The cam seal where leaking and the oil form the can seal is getting onto the alternator belt thus making it squeal and eventually break.
