ive been getting a terrible belt squeal at start up when cold. it sounds like it is coming from the power steering area. i replaced both belts and it seems to be good for a few weeks but now the noise is coming back. what should be the next step. could the power steering pump cause the squeal noise?

I've had this problem with very DSM I've owned as well as probably every other DSM owner out there. I'm thinking its the bearings inside the power steering pump. I'm sure.mine is the original pump so its 15 yard old.

When I had this happen it was the bearings in my alternator. Pull the belts off and spin the pulleys and see if there is any weird resistance.

Ive had alternator replace recently so i know its not that. i didnt know if the power steering pump would make a squeeling noise, becuaes that where all the noise is coming from

Usually when the bearings go its like a constant chirping noise that just doesnt go away. OP you should make sure you clean your pulleys 100% with a wirebrush and brake clean. You want around a 1/4inch deflection on the belts. Overtightening will lead to premature bearing/belt wear. Have you also checked the inner rubber ring of the crank pulley?

I know from experience that it might be a loose belt. When you replaced the belts are you sure they are tight enough? Does it do the same thing when its raining? Moisture gets between the belt and pulley and can cause the squeal for a few seconds at start up.

It could be an alternator or power steering pulley bearing. Try looking for metal shavings under where the pulleys are. Also make sure the tension on the belt is right. Check ps fluid level. The squeling will get worse when steering. If you do take the belt off you can spin the pulleys and see if u can hear the bearings squel.

Oem alternator or parts store? Because the parts store ones a real pieces of junk, I have gone thru about 5 autozone alternators.

could also be A/C slip pull bearing worn out, tilting and rubbing the belt. also check the tensioner pulley. id remove the belts and shake the pulleys and spin them, check for excessive effort to spin, wobbling, and excessive bearing play.

Mine does this as well, it's something to do with my power steering because when I turn the wheel the tone and sound changes louder/quieter, it eventually goes away after a few min. It's gotta be around 0* for it to happen to me, or a colder rainy day.

mines doing exact same thing!!! i replaced waterpump pulley and it stopped throwing belts, so now its just squeeling after about 3 or so days of being just perfect haha.... it comes and goes randomly, my tension is perfect, and when it squeels my volts drop so im assumeing its the alternator, but theres no sign of it being bad in a free spin with my hand?
