I searched this pretty thoroughly, and believe I’m going about it correct just wanted to make sure I suppose, only my second dsm and my first one is when I was a punk 17 year old and didn’t know anything about cars.
Digging into the car figuring out what previous owners have done, I’ve found they added a air oil cooler and bypassed the factory water to oil. There was a kinked hose about 6 inches long connecting the two hard line nipples on the cooler that’s connected to the oil filter housing, which led me to attempt to understand how the entire system works. So I replaced that short hose with a pre bent one that fits much better. So now what I’m seeing is they ran hose/ used the factory hard line and basically bypassed the oil cooler, so I have a long hose/ hardline running from the thermostat housing to tucked behind the j pipe turbo area then goes up over by the down pipe and into the coolant pipe under the manifold. My question is can I just plug off both ends and not have that long bypass line? Not messing with any cooling to the turbo I believe.

Yes, you can remove the line from the thermostat returning to the water pipe and plug both ends. The existing line may be a little easier to seal, depending on your method of "plugging" each end, but I understand the concern.

Have you considered a thermostat housing and water pipe for a 1990 turbo that would eliminate both of those points altogether?

I was hoping to find a rubber plug suitable for coolant and temps with a hose clamp on each one. That would be a sweet upgrade if I can source the parts for the 90 style. I would like to get rid of this sandwich style inlet/ outlet for my air oil cooler, seems like a weird set up and I noticed the oil filter was slightly loose on the first oil change I did and I could tell by all the dam oil present around the filter. Still need to look into if I can tap into somewhere else for my air cooler

Picked these up to try and plug off the thermostat and water pipe nipple. It says it is for coolant systems… think they will hold? I will have hose clamps securing them. Mostly worried about it bursting under heat but again it says it’s for coolant

So I ended up making my own make shift plug for now, I didn’t trust the stuff off the shelf from Oreillys. Made two, one for each side, used a 3/8 bolt with a shank and cut the threads off. Will definitely be searching for the 90 conversion. Thanks for confirming wiseman
