Water pump wheel difference, which should I use?

I’m gathering all my parts and doing a mockup of the parts I do have so I know I have all the hardware and such that I need, so I know what I may be missing. The engine I recently got came with its’ own water pump, and I have another 6 bolt WP I bought from the salvage yard (seen below).

The one originally on the engine is on the left, salvage yard one on the right.
They’re basically the same until they’re flipped over.

As you can see, the pump wheels are different. I've never seen a wheel like the one on the original pump. Which one should I use? The original was binding on the block with the wheel while turning in by hand. I tried this with the one from the salvage yard and it doesn’t touch the block. I then tried the original with a new gasket in there, and I spun freely, with no touching. They both spin freely, but the original spins better. I’m leaning toward using the original, but still can’t get past the binding part. Should I continue since it’ll be fine with the gasket?

In all honested, I recommend you buy a new oem one. Never really know the condition of a used water pump and its something that you dont want to risk and have go bad. Not the easiest thing to change either so I say buy a new oem and have your mind at ease

Same thing as Jordan posted about....

For the price of a new Oem water pump why risk either of them being faulty (which you stated the one on the left is anyways)

When I had my 4G64 built my builder actually wanted me to use the one similar to the pump on the right because of the blade design. It was working for me.

I'll most likely get a new pump like you both have said, but was just curious about the wheels inside. Which wheel is better? Which one should be on a new one?

The one on the right is the better one and is the design of the factory pump. The one on the left almost looks like the wheel was put on upside down.
I agree, get a new one - never trust a used one. And I've never seen an aftermarket one that lasts as long as a factory pump (2-3 times longer) and I've tryed many. It's worth the extra $ IMO.

Older thread I know but the one on the left is an advance auto parts one. The one on the right is an OEM fin design, but like everyone else said go new OEM.

And yet both gates and GMB have a closed fin design. Both companies supply many O.E. applications. I run a gates waterpump on every one of my engines. They're almost always a closed fin design. No issues what so every and literally 1/3 of the price of an OEM pump. GMB pumps are even cheaper!

Sure, buy the OEM pump if you'd like, but I'll stick to my Gates pumps. Tried and true for hundreds of thousands of miles.
