Hey guys,

The water pump and timing belt hydraulic tensioner on my 1990 TSi finally (and simultaneously) went out, at 115,000 miles. I want to replace all the local parts, too. According to the 1000 previously asked DSM questions FAQ, this includes:

"-All 5 accessory belts
-Timing belt tensioner
-Balance shaft belt tensioner
-Water pump
-Oil pump sprocket and nut
-Seals for the following: oil pump, balance shaft, crankshaft, and the o-ring under the balance shaft plug.
-Timing belt tensioner bearing, timing belt idler pulley bearing, and balance shaft tensioner bearing
-Crankshaft accessory pulley/harmonic balancer"

However, I am having difficulty finding the ones that I have highlighted in bold. The local dealership doesn't know 1Gs well, and couldn't figure out what a couple of these things are.

Could anyone please link me to the items in bold? What other names are they called by?

I believe this link is the "Timing belt tensioner bearing, timing belt idler pulley bearing, and balance shaft tensioner bearing" but am not sure.

Should I install a new harmonic damper as well as a new harmonic balancer?

Thanks very much for the help!

Timing belt tensioner, timing belt idler pulley, and balance shaft tensioner. They are bearings.

Harmonic damper = harmonic balancer.

Extremepsi.com carries a majority of your OEM replacement needed parts at usually a fraction of what the dealer will charge you. I am in the process of replacing all timing components whilst doing a H/G replacement. Depending on the miles & condition of your harmonic balancer, any cracks? Then replace it.

You don't need to replace the oil pump sprocket or nut. There is a seal behind the sprocket you may want to replace, however. There are only 5 total belts on the 4G63 engine; this includes the two timing belts.

The link you provided would cover the "Timing belt tensioner bearing, timing belt idler pulley bearing, and balance shaft tensioner bearing". Here is Mitsubishi's listings for the bolded seals and their respective part numbers.
Eng FR Case O-Ring: MD041021 -- o-ring under the balance shaft plug (a.k.a. front case or castle plug)
Eng Oil Pump Drive Gear Shaft Oil Seal: MD365697 -- the one under the oil pump sprocket
Crankshaft FR Oil Seal: MD343563 -- crankshaft seal also commonly called the front main seal

I think I have everything mostly sorted out. From one vendor I will be purchasing:

Balance Shaft Belt (MR984778)
Timing Belt (MD326059)
Timing Belt Tensioner (MD164533)
Tensioner Pulley (MD129355)
Idler Pulley (MD156604)
Crank Pulley (MD377604)
Balance Shaft Seal Evo VIII-IX / 90-99 DSM (MD343565)
Oil Pump Sprocket Seal Evo VIII-IX / 90-99 DSM (MD365697)
Cam Seal Gasket (MD372536)
Water Pump with gasket, etc. (MD972052)
Water Pump/Pipe O-Ring (MD030764)

And from another vendor, the alternator belt, and water pump bolts and o-ring just in case.

I'm also looking at the front crankshaft seal from a third vendor. And also the camshaft tensioner pulley even though I am not sure whether I will have access to it or even need to replace it.

I'm just curious, but is there a particular reason you are replacing your crankshaft pulley? In any case, I show MD376608 -- not MD376604 -- for the crankshaft pulley. You won't need the Water Pipe/Pump O-Ring (MD030764) as it is included with the Water Pump Kit (MD972052). Is there a reason you didn't include the Balance Shaft Belt Tensioner Pulley (MD115976)? Make sure you get (2) of the cam seals.

It is always a good idea to take care of the crankshaft front seal while you are in there. There will be plenty of room to access the camshaft -- or timing belt -- tensioner pulley (which you have listed, MD129355); just like the crankshaft seal, you are much better off replacing it than not.

The 1000 DSM questions FAQ mentions the crankshaft accessory pulley, and I couldn't figure out whether that was it or whether it would need replacing or not. What do you think?

I couldn't find one at any of the three online vendors I was looking at, but I will certainly call the local stealership to see if they have one.

I just wanted to add, for anyone who may be following along, that I realized that the "camshaft tensioner pulley" and part #MD129355 are the same thing.

I think that if you already have one that isn't separated (i.e. it is still in one piece and showing no signs of becoming two), there is little point to buy a new one when they cost as much as they do new. In all my DSM experiences, I've only had one separate on me.

On the other hand, if you are looking for absolute peace of mind and have the extra money to throw around, it certainly isn't a bad thing to do.
