1996 GST water pump replacement. I'm new here to to the site and i'm a proud owner of a DSM. My question is i need help replacing my water pump. Does anyone know if i can replace the pump without taking off the timing belt. I just had my belt replaced 5k miles ago and didnt think to replace pump. I got the engine mount, all the belts, covers and water pump pulley off. now what would be the next best step. If i dont have to take the timing belt off i dont want to. I don't want to bend any valves or anything when putting it back on. Thanks for the help

Unfortunetely, the timing belt has to be removed. One of the water pump's bolts is behind the tentioner pulley. One may also be behind the tensioner itself. I know, it sucks.

Here's the instructions for the timing belt removal and installation.
Timing Belt VFAQ

I have looked up that forum and I sort of understand it but not really. I just don't understand how to readjust the belt or get the timing right. I dont want to break anything else. Sorry if i sound dumb. I have replaced engines on hondas and everything else but this is another monster.
p.s. this might be a dumb question but how do i turn the top camshaft pulley so the timing marks are facing each other?

Yes it is a monster but i did it for the first time my first time working on my car, check vfaq on the belt tension. Its best if you arent sure have a mechanic do it. If you make a mistake or down the road something goes wrong your valves are shot. Its cheaper to have a pro do it than spend over a grand for a head job, gaskets, and still you have to have it timed. Use a wrench on both sprokets do a search lots of info on this topic.

Thanks for all the help. I had to put the engine mount on and the tire to move in the garage bc next door neighbor complained i was working on the car in the street.:notgood:
I think i'm going to pull off everything that i need to and put on the new water pump, then i'm paying a master tech i know $50 to get my belt on and adjusted right. I will watch and learn though thanks everyone
