I picked up a new 96 talon the other day for 1600 bucks. Runs good thus far for what I paid. This isn't my first Talon or experience I've had with the turbo systems. Last night I was leaving work and after a letting the car and turbo get warmed up I got up on it a little bit. Anyways it boosted and ran good, but when I let off I could hear an exhaust leak. Immediately I could tell it was my O2 dump leaking. So I stopped and take a look at it, it has a small leak out the O2 dump.

Now I have went through a couple dozen threads on stuck wastegate issues, all of the threads are people who have been messing with their cars and didn't shim their wastegate for proper preload or have vacuum line problems or something. My car had no changes to the system when this happened. I took some pliers and played with the flapper arm and couldn't get it to seal up. Does anybody have experience with this?

Sounds like the housing is cracked around the flapper, the flapper lever sleeve is walking out of the housing allowing some of the hole to be exposed, or the head of the actuator is smashed inward a little and causing the flapper to hang open.

I pulled the actuator arm off. Its catching on something so I'd imagine there is one worn part or another in there. I'll have to pull the O2 housing off some time and look I guess

The sleeve that holds the wastegate flapper arm and pushed out all you need to do is tap it back in with a hammer. You will be able to tell if the arm is far from the turbine housing.

I'm having a similar issue where I just had the head gasket replaced and now it sounds like most of the exhaust is being pushed out the dump tube. My car is loud all the time where as before it only got loud when it dumped. I took the wastegate out and it was closed. I pumped some air through it and watched it open and close no problem. Seems like the mechanic fudged something up so I took it back and they cant figure it out... btw I'm not trying to jack your thread I just thought it was interesting that I was having a similar problem.

^ The mechanic probably set the turbo down hard on the wastegate actuator while it was removed from the car and it pushed the actuator head inward a little, screwing up the spring tension which once held the flapper shut. You can fix this with a large screwdriver or prybar.
