Want a subwoofer but like your trunk? The solution!

So no split fold down seats like stated?
Also it's probably not air tight.
Pics of the back?

Creativity, +1

But honestly, It looks like shit. Doesn't look like it belongs there.

They sell subs that fit in small, sealed enclosures, and you don't lose much of your hatch space. Honestly, unless you sealed that completely, you'll have some blowby, and won't have great bass.

I don't know if I would like a sub there because there's random times when a third person need a ride or something and I wouldn't want them ruining the sub. Are you going to try and make a shield for it?

If youre looking for some better sound down the road, scrap those seats and get some good ones back in there. Buy a 6 1/2" component set for the fronts and rears. crutchfield.com has the adapters to fit a 6 1/2 in a 6x9 hole on a dsm. The problem with getting 6x9s in the rear is that you dont have a whole lot of depth for a nicer speaker. Components on an amp are gonna give you some pretty decent bass if you like rock and metal. If you really wanna go all out on it, line the area under the door panels and rear speaker panels with dynamat. You wont be dissapponted. I had a set of MTX components in the front and rear of my 97 GS. Both sets were powered by their own 500W power acoustic amp. I built a custom box in the trunk for a 12" volfenhag DVC(cheap sub but Ive never been able to wear one out) and it was on its own 2000W amplifier. I plan to do the same thing in my GSX but without the 200lbs of subwoofer stuff. If I really feel the need for some extra bass, Ill go with some shallow mount 10" speakers on a smaller custom box up against the rear seats. I usually have a 40 pound tool box in the trunk so I dont want the extra weight of a sub and loss of trunk space.

I've never seen a subwoofer in the middle of the rear seats before. It's creative though.

How much did that cost to do? Very creative also!

If youre talking to me, I think it came to about 1500. The most expensive thing was the speakers. I think I paid around 400 per set. You can make a good mid quality set sound great if you tune them right. Its been so long since Ive had to buy MDF so I cant remember how much I paid for the stuff. I just took my spare tire out and used that area as part of the box so I would have a little more air space for the gigantic sub. Since I own a turbo model now, Im on a bit of a budget because I have to fix something every other week. Im thinking that I can do the whole thing over again for under 1k. It makes it easier if you just buy one thing at a time. That way you start stacking up parts in your garage until you get ready for a long day of work and you dont go broke in the process.

Creative... but :barf:.

You wanna keep your trunk? EASY! I've built a few of these types of trunk boxes and its verrrrry simple.

This is an excellent looking option, and something I would consider for myself. Does this setup allow you to keep your spare?

+1 fpr creativity -3 for looks and posibilty of getting jacked. Idk I like my split folding seats. Like said above, there are random occations where 3 people seat in the back.

Uhm, possibly if you build the box right. The one I built, I ditched the spare and the box was inside the spare tire compartment... so I had more trunk space than this guy.

Personally I will eventually get a box like this for my trunk without the big ricey Mitsu logo on it. Best design for a clean looking install.

I've always been a fan of these...

Elemental Designs

They're 6 inch subwoofers that handle 200w RMS and only require a 0.2 cu.ft. enclosure. Three = One good decent wattage 12. I've heard them before, and was FLOORED. Install options are limitless...

Yes and ED (Elemental Designs) are having a HUGE sale on the 6" Subs. They are like 39 bucks a pop! AMAZING Sound too. I've installed these in BMW's to replace the stock subs.

*EDIT* Just got an email from ED. Since I'm a dealer.

Is there a box behind the sub or is it just free air?

I also think a grill gaurd would make it look nicer and protect it.

Here is what I made in my GS trunk. I have a cover that goes over the subs when I need to load stuff in the hatch. Believe it or not, I have had a 32" Tv and some other junk back there when I was moving!
Im a real stickler for sound quailty so I had to have a solid MDF box. The JL W3 subs at 1 ohm on a Rockford Punch 801s 2400 watt amp is EXTREMELY LOUD. Last time i went to a DB drag I hit a 142db with this setup. I have 0 Gauge wire and 2 Capacitors/ power blocks , and another amp for the MIDs and HIGHs under the eclipse piece. There is also Storage for My Emergency kit (jumper cables/first aid/tire patch/ Jack and tools)Even tho I had NO spare tire anymore.

When you fold the back seat down it is level with the trunk floor!

Those look nice!

Do you think that these would work good as a replacement to the crappy 6x9's in the back of the 2g's or do these things need to be boxed?

The ED Subs can run free air... but they are SUB only speakers, they wont work good for components.

As for the Box I made Jeff. that one there is not my box, but the one I made, was just like yours in a way, but 500000000000x not as nice as yours. I built the floor frame and then positioned a slimline ported box of my choice in the trunk, made the cuts, cutout the piece where the box was going to go, mounted the box and then carpeted the entire thing. It came out nice, and the sound is AMAZING!

Jeff, I give you severe mad props on that trunk, its the most beautiful thing I have ever seen! A++++++++++

Alright. After very carefull consideration, I've found the solution to my "not enough bass" problem for my Spyder.

I have 1 12" in a truck box in trunk. Its decent. Nothing that great. But I want some bass that'll massage my back. So I found the perfect place for a set of 10" subs. Inside the convertable storage unit. 12's are too big, and 8"s are too small. The top is still functional. I custom made box. Its not carpeted yet, so thats why no pictures. As soon as I get the parts for my car and carpet the box, I will post pictures. I'm still considering what the original poster had done. In time, I'm sure there will be a subwoofer there as well. :dsm:

No body is even going to tell him, that the sub is facing the wrong way?..
It was a good idea, but any one who know more than a little about audio, would just laugh at it.

And the best thing about a speaker box is you can take it out, any time you need extra room.
5 minute weight reduction!!!

Yea. What I'm thinking of is just replacing the stock 6x9's with some of these 6" ED subs and then just getting a nice component setup for the front. Those rear 6x9's, IMO, are pretty much worthless. If I needed more rear mids/highs, I could always custom cut some smaller sized speakers into that rear quarter panel interior plastic.

I'm just looking for a way to get a "Bose" stereo type sound without going through a major audio overhaul in my car.

I've done the 125 lb. speaker boxes with 12" subs before, but I'm looking for a more quality sound, not to be the loudest bastard in town. If needed, I'm cool with adding a nice, single 10" sub in the rear.

Got any pics under that? What is that top layer? Looks great.

No sorry I dont have any pics of the underside. The top cover piece is just a thin 1/2" sheet of plywood with a layer of foam and vinyl over it. I work at an upholstery shop so we have all the materials. I never thought to take pics of the install. I made this back in like 2002. It's been through a few updates since then though.

The AMP and SUBs are actually bolted to the trunk floor. Then the black vinyl top piece with the Eclipse cut out lays over top of everything.
