yea im doing that but it looks pretty worn/dirty from the pictures i dunno i just get a bad vibe when i look at it LOL
im more worried about things breaking

LOL its a DSM if you are worried about stuff breaking you shouldnt be getting a DSM.

Someone posted on here once I saw

"Buy a DSM,
Become a Mechanic"

It makes me laugh

but back on topic, do a compression test, take it for a test drive, make sure its is running properly, then make up your mind.

is it just me, or is it missing a crap load of stuff in the top right hand corner? Compare to this pic: http://members.shaw.ca/dsm.1000q/Engineprimer/1G/Q2.htm
And that intake manifold looks like there's a load of dry oil on it. Honestly, that engine bay looks like ass. Don't be fooled by the mileage. I've seen a 1g dsm with 85k on the clock have serious motor problems. Don't rush into buying someone else's problem.

This is how my engine bay looks and it has NEVER been cleaned in the time that i've owned it and I highly doubt the previous owner ever cleaned it either. This is how an engine bay should look like:

see stuff like this bugs me out ### i really want this car and im probally gonna buy it as long as it has good compression

when i got my car it was worse then that. it has crud stuck on all the walls
i got the car for 600 and expected tonnes of mechanical problems under the hood.
other then exhaust manifold studs and a vaccum tee. its still running strong.

and if you dont think you can fix things as little as that then double think getting a dsm.
fixing it yourself is very rewarding

back to that quote that Merkels said
i heard someone say something in their signature like

DSM's, Turning normal people into mechanics since 1989

LOL
good luck with the car, just work the bugs out before you drive the crap out of it

mine was real bad and cruddy when i first but mine. little elbow grease and some effort and i got mine looking pretty clean. But if your having doubts just keep looking and dont settle for the first thing you find.

When I bought my 1st gen, it had 172,000 miles on it and the engine bay didn't look anything like the one you are considering. And as others have suggested, it looks like the emissions components have been removed - Does your area require emissions testing? If so, and if the tags are about to expire, I would take the car for a quick test just to see if it would pass. Perhaps a compression test and a tail pipe sniff will give you more information about what's going on with the car and help guide your buying decision.

To me, it looks as though there was a fire under the hood (or serious oil burnage) and the owner is trying to sell you his problem. Unless you're really desperate, and your wife/gf doesn't mind you spending hours in the garage, I would pass.

If you initially have bad feelings about it, look at something else. I've found over the years that my 1st instinct/gut feeling is usually correct. They're plenty of cars out there, you just have to be patient.

my 0.02

And just for the sake of argument, have you run a Carfax on it? The emissions look missing to me too, might be a case of shade-tree monkeying gone wrong, if you're not too familiar with these cars, you might also shell out 60-100 bucks and have a pro mechanic look at it and get his opinion. Just MY .02, best of luck to ya. :laser:

Did you test drive the car? If so, how did it run?
