what are the visual differences between the 95 dsm 4g63 and the 97 dsm 4g63 if there are any? a guy is trying to sell me a used motor which he says came from a 97 but he owns a 95 and it doesnt look as if the cars taken car of so i dont see him going thru the trouble of changing the motor if he doesnt take care of the car.

i think the only difference is that the cas. it isnt there, instead its under the intake cam sprocket.

Look for the VIN on the motor and check to see the build date. The 97+ motor are the ones to have if you must go with a 7 bolt. The 2Gb uses a split thrust bearing design and have fewer cases of crankwalk unlike the 2Ga (95,96). Measure the crankplay and take the pan off and check some of the main bearings for damage.

But yes, the CAS as different as well.

when you say it isnt there you mean it isnt where? ill try to post the pic of the overveiw of the motor its all i have.

On the 95-96 4g63 the cas is in the cam sprocket.. In all other years there is a cas on the left side of the head on the back(intake) cam...

the cam gears are also different, the 95 96 have 4 spokes and the 97+ have 5, easiest way to figure it out, also on the 95 96 intake cam gear, it has the "circle thing" for the CAS to read.
