Ok i just bought a 98 GSX and i got it cheap... very cheap... the car wasn't running and with the help of you guys it now starts and runs fine (*CAS 180 out). My actual question to you is, is there any way to tell between the 6 and 7 bolt engine? The car has alot of signs the engine was just replaced and I'm curious whats in it, it appeared to be all stock till i had the valve cover off of it and found ARP head studs.

If you can help me I'd appreciate it... I'm fairly mechanically inclined so don't be afraid to give me some grunt work to do I'm just hoping i don't have to pull the tranny to look at the crank.

I think VFAQ has an article on this... but

CAS = 1g head
if you ever have the trans off, look at the flywheel bolts
dented oil pan? my 6 bolt pan is dented, but i haevn't checked my 7 bolt for comparison
 
Still got the t-25, and I'll check out vfaq to look at that... i'm trying to avoid pulling the tranny until i get the next engine built for in it, i'm working on a forged 6 bolt, but i was just curious what is in it already if anything.

How was your CAS off 180 on a 98??? If it indead was switchable it's a 1g cas. IF you want to see if it's a 6 bolt look down by the engine and tranny ( by the front trany mount ). If the engine and tranny are flush together the whole way down it's a 7 bolt. If the tranny pops out towards the radiator and the engine stays in then it's a 6 bolt.
 
Here is an easy quick way to tell. Look at the oil pan, specifically the area under where the crankshaft passes through the front cover, and rear seal support.

If the oil pan is completely flat even in those areas, as if it would sit with all edge surfaces touching on a flat surface, you have a 6-bolt.

If it curves downward along the edge rail (by rail, I mean the area where the bolts pass through) where the crankshaft comes through the block, you have a 7 bolt. If sat on a flat surface, there would be a gap at each end, under where the crank passes through the block.

This may sound confusing, but it's the best way I can explain it in writing.

Ok so far i've realized it is a 7 bolt block but it definatly is a switchable CAS becausei did it myself, why would somebody put just the cas on maybe a head?? any possible way to tell a 1g and a 2g head apart?... i could mic the cams but it there is an easier way i'll try that first

97-99 did have a cas on the passenger side of the engine. Its not like the 1g cas but it can be installed 180* out. Everyone saying it doesnt have a cas there only know about the 95-96 which had the cas behind the intake cam gear.
 
Ok, this is probably 2G stuff then as i suspected, I appriciate your help though and I'm sure i'll be asking for more.
