Vibration on the highway

I've got a 91 Talon TSI, we were on the freeway last night and I didn't have any vibration, but when we hit it again today, it seems as though we've developed one! It seems to only veibrate around 100KM/h, and it's at it's worst when I take my foot off the gas. The car has new shocks/struts all the way around, and new tires. So I've eliminated those as the possible cause. I checked the tires for bumps, and they feel good (I should feel that at all speeds anyways!) I checked for a thrown wheel weight, but it doesn't look like there's anything missing, although I could be wrong Everything feels tight, and looks good. But what should I check? The driveshaft carrier bearing?? Would it just go like that??? How loose is too loose? I can grab the d-shaft and wiggle it around a bit. How much would a new bearing run me? I don't have hours or a day to have the car out of commission, so it would have to be a replacement thing. Is it something I could pick up at the local parts store (like Lordco), or is it dealer only??? Okok.. I don't even know what it is.....


Oh, and if it is the carrier bearing, would it be bad to drive around until I can fix it??

i would see if you have a caliper starting to stick ... i had on that i just had to change a few days ago because of the vibration.

I have a bad carrier bearing and it doesn't vibrate on the highway. I would double check and make sure the wheels are balanced properly.

My 2g had that problem and it ended up being a CV joint boot was torn and the joint was rusting out and sticking. On my 1g though it did it around 65 m.p.h. and I had it aligned and ended up replaced all of the front ball joints, and inner and outter tie rod ends and now its smooth failing up to 85. I'm gonna say it's more of a suspension issue just because your car is 14 years old with all of the stock stuff probobly.

my 1g used to vibrate reeeaal bad on the highway once i reached like 55 mph. the whole car felt like it was just gonna fall apart. turns out replacing the clutch fixed it WTF

oh yeah, I forgot to mention, it has new axles in the front I was thinking maybe ball joints, I just didn't get a chance to check that yet. It seems to be comming out of the passanger side. For these cars, you have to replace the control arm to replace the ball joint don't you?? How much are those bad boys?? I am also going to check the tie rod ends as well.. .... It's more annoying than anything else really, just shake shake shake........shake shake shake...... It seems like three shake then good, and then 3 again... I dunno.... it would be much better if it would just shake all the time Oh, and it couldn't be the clutch, cause I don't have one .

What's with all this "DSMs are unreliable" crap I keep reading, I had a Laser before the Talon and I never had 1 problem, now I own the TSI and still, I'm not complaining. Sure I've got this problem, but...... it just one thing, everything else is good. Run's awsome, the dude before me took really good care of it. Just gotta figure it out......

Heya,

About a week ago I posted on here about a shake on the freeway, and I would only get it on the decel/coast (not during acceleration). Anyways, I found out what was causing it finally (first chance to actually look at it!!). The support bearing on the drivers front axle shaft decided to fall off. (The bolts snapped). I don't know exactly what happend, but my theory is the last dude to do it didn't torque them enough, cause we could easily back them out with a pick. So I put new bolts in, but it looks as though in the process of the axle shaft "whipping" for a week, the shaft is now bent

Is there any kind of "equal length shaft" mod I can do with this thing? I would like to just be done with this support bearing! Oh ya, I have a '91 Talon TSI. It's got ABS and all that sht.

Just going through my options here, I see NAPA has the shaft for $99 USD, but I live in Abbotsford BC That's like 1000 bucks canadian eh....

On a good note though, it looks like the last guy just rebuilt the head, so I know I've got a new head gasket, and the timing belt looks new. I changed the plugs just for the hell of it, they don't look like they've been in there too long. I bought the car at a used lot, they didn't seem to know much about the car. The back side of the head looks brand new. Just the front is a little dirty, I didn't notice until now. Woo-hoo.. just gotta fix the axle now!

So ya, the conversion thing.... such a thing???
