Hey guys

I've been hearing a noise coming from the head by the cam gears. I took off the head a few days ago and everything seem to be nice and tight no lose lifters or anything. Has anyone had this problem before its driving me crazy LOL

Thanks

Ya never know what some of these crazy kids install in their cars now, Craig!!

Gotta love the open valve cover breather...

Have you ever heard the car not make this noise? If so, what's been touched since then?

No it has ever made this sound. when i bought the car a few months ago it needed some tlc. so i fixed everything did all the maintenance that i saw on here. Replaced the valve cover gasket, turbo gasket, injectors seals, trans seals, all hoses were replaced, timing belt, timing tensioner, ect. the car runs great

It definitely sounds like the tensioner. I just finished my motor swap in my 1g and that's exactly what it was on mine. I checked the tensioner on my old motor. I was rather upset that I never took the time fix it even though I pushed it aside since I'd be doing my swap soon. Sound somehow travels upward between the front case and timing belt cover so if the sound was coming from your cam area that explains a lot. How reputable is this speed shop that installed your timing belt? It may not FOR SURE be YOUR issue, but it definitely sounds like it. How in depth did you check everything when you took the cover off? You're not going to be able to just reach up and jiggle things around. You need to verify and set the eccentric pulley's tension as well as make sure the gap for the hydraulic tensioners pulley is within spec. There's a constant bind on the timing belt so it's going to feel tight. When your car is running, what does your timing belt deflection look like below your exhaust cam pulley (as in looking down into your timing cover)? I had a decent amount of flapping going on down there, as in good deal more than I've had in the past year and a half since I last changed my timing belt.

well the speed shop seems to be good from what i heard he does good work and has worked on them before. when i seem everything it looked tight but then again dunno. also you say that it couldn't be the problem do you have any idea what else it would cause this?

I said "it may not FOR SURE be YOUR issue. I've never run into anything else that made a rattling sound like that of mine (and yours from what I can tell on the youtube vid). I can only give a possible idea based on my experience. As far as cam bearings go, or anything else that has been mentioned prior, that's just something you'll have to investigate. Troubleshooting is a B, my friend!

yeah i see that now with troubleshooting is a plan in the butt ugh

Check the engine timing belt cover. Sometimes if its not bolted up in all places it can vibrate and cause the plastic to slap the block which sounds like a rattle/vibration under the hood that comes and goes.

To me if its a rattle like noise coming from your cylinder head, possible problems may be

1) you have a tensioner that crapped out- as discussed

2) you have a larger foreign object in the tbelt cover getting juggled, like a bolt- scary prospect and perhaps warrants opening up the lower cover and hoping you can get it. - happened to a friend, miraculous that his timing belt wasnt shredded

3) Have you checked your oil pressure/level? Lifters/rockers get rattly/ticky when they see lower oil pressure than they like. The longer you let it go, the louder it gets typically.

4) This is kind of a one of situation i experienced, but I had a friend who's tendioners/accessory pullies began to rattle- but thats only because they were SERIOUSLY shot somehow, as in the BRACKET may be fixed to the block, but the pulley itself could be wiggled an 1/8 of an inch. It honestly should have fallen off. Ive never seen an idler pulley so bad

Have you checked the belt cover on the side of the engine? if its lose in one spot then it could be slapping the side of the engine. I've had an issue like that (thought it was coming from the head), the noise even seemed to increase with rpm but the noise was also intermittent so it was hard to tell wtf it was until one day i let it idle (heard the noise) and reached down to hold the cover and the noise stopped. After that, i noticed one of the bolts on the cover was missing (Never put in) so i bolted it up and it never made the sound again.
