Hey guys

I've been hearing a noise coming from the head by the cam gears. I took off the head a few days ago and everything seem to be nice and tight no lose lifters or anything. Has anyone had this problem before its driving me crazy LOL

Thanks

I'm not sure if Talons have one, but could it be the cam positioning sensor? Did you check the valves? It could be a loose housing or anything loose really.

It could be a random misfire. My old esi had one and I couldn't get rid of it for the life of me and you could feel it. It doesn't have a check engine light on does it?

Does it run hot at all? I know when mine gets up to operating tempurature you can hear the coolant boiling throughout the system.

When you say you took the head off, you literally mean the entire cylinder head was removed? If so then I'd double check your timing belt job along with any parts you replaced. A loose pulley may be just annoying right now, but it will eventually allow the timing belt to skip teeth or fall off which could lead to serious damage.

No not at all

well i took the valve cover off. I got my timing belt job done by a mechanic everything was replace with gates that was about a few months ago. I don't see why it could be that thought because the sound is coming from the head by the cam gears not the cam gears its self.

Has the car had any heli coils put in? I'm not sure if they'd cause a noise, but I know I had problems with my last one because some wingnut did a bad heli coil job before I bought it. I'm wondering if a spark plug might be slightly loose and is just vibrating in the socket. I know from experience that it may look like everything's tightened down, but looks can be deceiving.

double check your timing tensioner, they can make a loud noise when there bad.
Another thing, take the valve cover back off and put the car in nutral.put 1/2"drive rachett on the crank bolt (it should fit inside the bolt) and turn the crank clockwise slowly and make sure all your lifters are woking correcly, you could have one bad one

the timing tensionser was change out with the timing belt two months ago

Alright ill give that a try in see, but the noise is not a ticking noise tho

Does it sound like the rattle goes away above a certain RPM? My 1g does that, a loud rattle from the timing side coming from around the cam pulleys, but then isn't quite as loud after my engine warms up, and seems to go away after about 3k rpms. It's hard to judge the origin of noise, it seems to bounce around the engine bay. If anything, pull your timing cover and check for loose bolts. If it's not the hydraulic tensioner, it could be the bolt on the tensioning pulley arm has worked it's way loose.

the noise quites down a little bit when warmed up but it still makes it while driving but not at loud

Does the noise get louder when you open the oil cap?

no it doesn't I'm thinking it could be the cam bearings going bad not sure tho :(

Not to scare ya but it might be possible that the cam bearings are worn out. Just a possibility. Btw couldnt get any sound from your vid

there should be sound i just clicked on the link... but you might be right about the cam bearings being worn out:barf:

I would go to a parts store and flip through a Haynes manual. I just looked through mine and it didn't say what to listen for for worn cam bearings, but it did say to inspect the bearing surface for scoring and other damage and if they are damaged to replace the cams and possibly the cylinder head. But that's out of a 2 g manual.

Wow hard to pin point from the video... Check the bottom portion of the timing cover, make sure nothing is loose. If you want to inspect for bearing wear just make sure they are not scored and blue or turning blue in color. That almost sounds like you need to pull your timing cover and inspect things for looseness.

i took off the bottom portion everything seemed fine i turned on the car and nothing was loose.

I am going to have to say that is for sure the timing belt tensioner!!! Here is a video of my car when it did the same thing....

Something is just not right! - YouTube

I would replace your timing belt tensioner even if you know it is brand new a few months ago. Not properly setting the timing belt tension before pulling the locking pin from the tensioner will cause it to extend farther than it should which actually can cause it to wear out faster.

Thanks allot man it sounds really similar to mine I'm gonna take the time belt tensioner off this weekend hopefully that fixes the problem. Then I can finally tune my car :)
